If folks in Canada don’t want to be mocked as the 51st state, then Canada has to stop behaving like a colony, extracting oil, digging and exporting raw rocks while letting others capture the real value. When was the last time a refiner or smelter built in Canada?

Instead of acting hurt by the Presidents claims, how about a look at the actual facts. Canada industrial strategy is right out the classic colony playbook.

Canada can and should extract and process its own natural resources at scale, instead of blocking or slow‑walking refineries and smelters and then complaining about U.S. policy or foreign ownership.

The United States has just announced a new smelter to process critical minerals onshore, backed by major private capital and a direct U.S. government stake, precisely to regain control of strategic supply chains. If Canada wants to avoid the “51st state” label, it needs to stop acting like a resource colony and start building its own processing capacity with the same seriousness and urgency.

Canada needs to stop complaining and dithering and act like a Resource Super Power it could potentially become.

So Monday morning the Liberal leader stands by his candidate, though the candidate has publicly suggested members of the public should kidnap his opponent and hand him over to the Chinese consulate and though it has been evident for days that he has to go.

Monday night, near midnight, after a day of nonstop, universally negative commentary, culminating in news that the RCMP is looking into the matter, the candidate suddenly “resigns.”

Can’t imagine how this could possibly have been handled worse.
