Activist: "Then just don't have the cow."

Farmer: "The grass still dies in autumn. It rots where it falls. The carbon goes back into the air either way, just without anyone getting fed in the middle."

Activist: "It's not that simple."

Farmer: "It's grass, cow, breath, grass. Or it's grass, rot, air, grass. Same circle, fewer dinners. If that's complicated for you I'd stay away from the water cycle. That one's got clouds in it."

@SamaHoole My Irish grandmother made something very similar- oxtails instead ( though that was likely a substitution her mother made for the lack of mutton here in Minnesota when they emigrated,) rutabaga featured large- is that perhaps what you’re calling “Swedes?”

Some of us are still doing it. I cook from scratch daily.
I make my own bread & bread related- rolls, biscuits, English muffins, pizza crust, etc.
Cook and bake with lard, tallow (rendered myself,) butter, ghee, olive or avocado oils.
I no longer milk a cow (had to stop when the grandbabies started coming) but pick up fresh jersey from a friend weekly.
5 of our grandkids are on the farm with us so spend the majority of their time outside, playing, tending livestock, riding dirt bikes etc.
All of the nonresident grandchildren come here for daycare and spend their days doing much the same- age appropriately!

It’s all possible but it truly helps to have a family or community where all are contributing as there expertise or time allow.

Elon Musk just put the entire university system on trial.

Not the curriculum. Not the professors. The premise.

Musk: “You don’t need college to learn stuff. Everything is available basically for free. You can learn anything you want for free.”

For a thousand years, universities held one monopoly. Access. You paid the toll or you stayed ignorant.

The internet erased that in a decade.

Every lecture. Every framework. Every textbook. Free. From any screen on Earth.

The six-figure tuition is no longer buying knowledge. It is buying a signal.

Musk: “There is a value that colleges have, which is seeing whether somebody can work hard at something, including a bunch of annoying homework assignments, and still do their homework assignments.”

That is the product. Not intelligence. Not creativity. Not vision. Compliance.

You are paying $200,000 to prove you can tolerate bureaucracy on a schedule.

Musk: “Colleges are basically for fun and to prove you can do your chores. But they’re not for learning.”

The entire system is a sorting machine for corporate HR. It does not measure what you can build. It measures whether you can sit still, follow directions, and deliver on command.

Four years of obedience dressed as education.

Musk: “If you’re trying to do something exceptional, you must have evidence of exceptional ability. I don’t consider going to college evidence of exceptional ability.”

The system optimizes for average. It rewards the compliant. It certifies the patient. It quietly filters out everyone who refuses to wait for permission.

The ones who reshaped the modern world never finished the test.

Musk: “Gates is a pretty smart guy, he dropped out. Jobs is pretty smart, he dropped out. Larry Ellison, smart guy, he dropped out.”

They did not drop out because it was too hard. They dropped out because the speed limit was too low.

The most dangerous thing a university does is convince a generational talent that finishing the syllabus is the achievement.

It is not. It is the floor.

A degree is a receipt for compliance. The future has never belonged to people who finish their homework. It belongs to the ones who never needed the assignment.

Between 2021 and 2024, 448,000 children crossed the border alone and were placed into the care of the U.S. government.

Here is what happened to them.

HHS placed children with sponsors. Those sponsors were often not their parents. In fact, only 37% of children ended up with a parent. The rest went to relatives, distant relatives, or unrelated adults.

The vetting process consisted of a phone call. No in-person meeting required. Background checks were skipped for 11,488 children. Home studies were not conducted for 79,143 children under the age of 12.

Addresses collected for sponsors were wrong 80% of the time, according to DHS law enforcement.

65,000 calls to a federal hotline reporting concerns about children went unanswered under Biden. When the Trump administration began reviewing them, they found children calling to report that grown men were coming into their rooms at night and touching them. Nothing had been done.

291,000 children were never given a court date. 32,000 who were given court dates never showed up. Over 31,000 had blank or undeliverable addresses on file.

HHS knowingly sent two children to a household with confirmed MS-13 gang connections. A staff member flagged it. HHS overruled her and transferred the children anyway. When she spoke up, her credentials were revoked and she was walked off the job site.

In one case, more than 50 children were sent to the same address.

A 15-year-old girl was smuggled from Ecuador by an adult male who had been in a relationship with her since she was 13. She arrived pregnant. His mother sponsored her. They lived together in Harlem.

In New Jersey, three minors ages 15, 16, and 17 were found living without their sponsor, in filthy conditions with mouse infestations, no food, and no school enrollment. A forensic interview revealed verbal, physical, and sexual abuse and labor exploitation.

In Tennessee, siblings were forced to work off smuggling debts for their sponsor.

In California, 14 children were rescued from marijuana grow sites where they had been working alongside adults convicted of rape, child molestation, and kidnapping.

A child found during a worksite enforcement operation in Alabama had never attended school in the two years since entering the United States.

The New York Times found migrant children working overnight shifts in slaughterhouses, on construction sites, and in factories making products for brands like Cheetos, Lucky Charms, Fruit of the Loom, and General Mills. A 16-year-old boy from Guatemala was killed at a slaughterhouse.

HHS whistleblower Tara Rodas: "I thought I was going to help place children in loving homes. Instead, I discovered that children are being trafficked through a sophisticated network. We have delivered these children to criminals, traffickers, and members of transnational criminal organizations who are using the program as a white glove delivery service of children."

Her supervisor told her: "You need to understand, at HHS we only get sued if we keep kids in care too long. We don't get sued by traffickers."

27 children located during welfare checks were found dead. By murder, suicide, or drug overdose.

This is not a political argument. These are government records, DHS press releases, Senate testimony, OIG reports, and whistleblower disclosures.

448,000 children entered the system. The system failed them.

Why did Tolkien call death a gift?

In The Silmarillion, he writes death is an exclusive gift given to mankind by God. All other creatures envy this gift, including the immortal elves:

Mankind alone, through death, is granted union with the divine.

Tolkien's point is that immortality in a fallen world is not a blessing, nor man's actual purpose. To live forever in a world marred by corruption, vice, and decay is to be trapped with no escape.

Death, then, is not a tragic ending, but a release — a return of creation to its creator. The humility of mortal man leads to a glory far greater than immortality.

In other words, man was made for something greater than earthly pleasure. Death is the preparation for eternity.

Today we tend to see this backwards. We treat death as the ultimate evil, and endless life as the ultimate good, no matter the cost. We try to preserve life indefinitely, and in doing so, lose sight of what life is actually for.

Tolkien's final insight is simple:

A man who refuses to die for anything will one day find he has nothing worth living for.

A world that fears death above all else will never reach the highest good, for life truly begins when you discover a love greater than life itself.
