Mark Schlereth has a message for Brandon Aiyuk:
“Here’s a little piece of advice for you. You are exactly where you are because of the shitty decisions that you’ve made. You are not a victim. It is not anybody else’s fault. The San Francisco 49ers didn’t conspire against you to ruin your career. You are where you are because of your stupidity. Just admit it, embrace it, and move forward with it.”
One thing that will always be a hard pill to swallow is the 49ers unwillingness to build the BEST OL possible
They openly discuss how fundamentally they believe being strong on the DL is paramount to a teams success while openly disregarding the OL
While the 49ers have found success with average OL play, why not just use a few high-end resources to solidify the best 5 you can to elevate the offense even further
These are guys who play every single snap against some of the most athletic freaks in the world
I’ve tried to understand this methodology for years but with how teams continue to stack DL’s, it just feels a bit negligent especially when it has bitten them multiple times in big moments
Now the 49ers are going into this season with a massive hole at LG while NFC West opponents keep stacking the DL
Kyle Shanahan's strengths and weaknesses:
Strengths:
- Scheme
- Play-calling
- Play design
- Gets the most out of QB's not named Trey Lance
- Offenses that produce YAC
- Double-digit wins in 4/5 years
- If he wins a Super Bowl, first ballot HOF and one of the most influential offensive minds ever
Weaknesses:
- Game management, blowing leads
- Clock management
- Teams struggle to come back in games if they go down early because they can't dictate the pace, flow & rhythm of the game
- Offensive line philosophy
- Having too much say in the draft when he scouts prospects for two months, compared to scouts who scout prospects year-round, leading him to reach on picks
#49ers
This sparks up a very interesting, nuanced conversation re: 49ers draft strategy
Anyone who has covered this regime recognizes they do not draft off media consensus and never will, why should they? They invest millions of dollars in their scouting department and have insight most media will never have.
However, if this data is correct, it shows exactly why this fanbase has lost it’s faith in the front office to hit on their perceived “reaches” in the draft
The perception is, when they “reach” they miss which from an outside perspective, adds insult to injury because unfortunately for the 49ers front office, our fanbase is very interested and invested in the draft
If they are truly operating at a 14% success rate going against consensus over the last 4 years, I fully understand fans negative perception of the process. This is a results business, right?
The 49ers are working off two timelines, pre and post Trey Lance. Since Trey Lance was drafted, there has been more bad than good but they have still found quality starters post-Trey, hell it led them to their current franchise QB. Pre-Trey they found some of the biggest stars in the league but even then, still had some decent reaches in that time frame
I think this current draft is being met with so much negativity because it aligns with fans perception of the below tweet and everything that has occurred post-Trey
We know this team has one of the best coaching staffs in the league, they have added some quality free agents and found gems late in the drafts which has allowed this team to continue to be one of the best in league
Where I think the disconnect strives from for a lot of fans, what if they didn’t reach and miss early in these drafts? Would they have a Super Bowl by now? I believe this is how fans perceive misses on early reaches which sparks this wave of negativity when this team drafts now
The question needs to be asked, do the 49ers need to take into account consensus early on, because when players fall to them, it seems to work out pretty well opposed to the inverse
Definitely not a cut and dry situation but fascinating one at that
The Houston Texans offensive line has been really bad the last few years and it has impacted the development of CJ Stroud.
What have they done this offseason? All in on the O-line.
This is what the 49ers should do, but continue to ignore it.
Connor Colby vs. Robert Jones LG competition should be fun after you gave your QB $55 million per year.
#49ers
Being a scout for the 49ers must be very frustrating. You scout all year, but have no say in rounds 1-3, then you see the GM and coach reach on multiple players.
Then when the Niners lean on scouts on day three, they crush it.
It's a flawed process.
#49ers
I’d rank #49ers draft priorities:
1-Guard-Need a week 1 starter at LG (Bisontis or Rutledge)
2-Safety-Need a secondary leader who can run, hit and cover (AJ Haulcy?)
3-Edge-20 sacks. Bosa and Mykel are coming back, but 20 sacks. Enough said (Jaishawn Barham?)
4-DT-It’s the Niners and they always go DT in rd1 historically and Christen Miller would be nice.
5-CB-JSN and Puka are just getting rolling in the division, the board at 27 could be special CB rich(D’Angelo Ponds, Keion Scott, Chris Johnson)
-Key-Must draft “great players” over positional needs.
-Why is WR not top 5? It’s a deep draft class with many excellent day 3 options.
-No OT? Caleb Lomu is heavily mocked to SF. I prefer Austin Barber-Florida LT as the best tackle option, after Rd1, likely in rd 3-4.
Bill Walsh always said: “I’d rather move on from a guy a year early than a year too late.”
The 49ers are going to be late on a lot of guys. Their core is getting old. The issue is that core is full of leaders. And I think that’s why they will let them decline on this roster.
“This is a feel vs. real type of game. The bottom line is when I walk up to the plate, I want to be the toughest out possible. It’s a slap in my face to strikeout.”
@RealCJ10 talks about the old school vs. new school approach at the plate.
Arik Armstead was asked how much of an impact will Robert Saleh have on the 49ers defense:
“I think he has a tremendous impact. I love Saleh… I look back at the 2020 season. We had a whole bunch of injuries and with Saleh’s leadership, even though it seemed like our whole team was hurt, we still finished with a top 5 defense. That was the standard that he set. It didn’t matter who was out there, the standard was set that we’re the best defense in the league and we still finished top 5 in defense regardless of who was out there. So, Saleh is going to bring a lot back to the Bay.”
