Project Hail Mary writer Andy Weir believes the secret to his stories resonating is that they are uplifting and positive.
"Honestly, I think sci-fi has been taken over by bleak dystopian misery and dark political allegory nowadays. I write stories of hope where human nature is positive and uplifting. At least, that’s what I’m shooting for. And frankly, there just aren’t many authors doing that right now, so I ended up accidentally cornering a market."

seeing ppl say this is a bit funny bc in a lot of art circles years ago online, at least the ones i was in, they'd get so fucking anal about the term "oc" being used for fan characters and insist you use "fc" (fan character) because "Ocs are your characters for an original story"
i wonder why people are starting to think oc is a negative or degrading thing, call your characters your ocs theres nothing wrong with it. it’s not justified to think of the ocs and story as lesser than all because you refer to them as ocs…thats still your passion project

One thing that pains me about Ryland Grace is that he had to go through the grief of finding out he was on a suicide mission TWICE.
In the book he is literally thrown in a cell and has to stomach that realization before being induced into the coma. Then again when he awakens
Ik it’s been said by many people but something I love so dearly about phm is how open grace is with his emotions. He is in awe and scared and upset and grieving so openly, it’s so refreshing. Understanding that he has no image to upkeep in front of an alien who has no
