A copy of Super Mario Brothers was sold at auction today for $3 Million US dollars—the highest amount for a video game sale at auction in history. Here is why:

This is from NES Super Mario Bros. second production run. No sealed copies are thought to exist from the first run. It is in near-flawless condition.

Released in 1984 this uses a gloss sticker packaging method, before Nintendo employed shrink wrap.

Because of this, it is very difficult to maintain the cardboard—yet this copy is almost factory new.
