Today I finally understood something about Donald Trump that I had been missing this entire time. And when it hit me — it hit me completely. Because, look at who this man chose to surround himself with.
Not billionaires.
Not people born into power.
Not people who had everything handed to them.
Karoline Leavitt — 27 years old. Ice cream shop girl from New Hampshire.
Trump looked at her and saw something the entire world missed.
Made her the youngest Press Secretary in American history.
Susie Wiles — a woman who has spent her whole life quietly strategizing from the background.
No fame. No spotlight. Just pure brilliance.
Trump looked at her and said — you will be my Chief of Staff. First female Chief of Staff in American history.
JD Vance — a soldier. A boy from Appalachia who served his country in uniform before he ever served it in office.
Trump looked at him and said — you will stand beside me.
Pete Hegseth — a soldier who gave everything on the battlefield. Two Bronze Stars.
Trump looked at him and said — you will lead our military.
Marco Rubio — the son of a bartender and a hotel maid. Two immigrants who came to America with nothing.
Trump looked at their son and made him the first Latino Secretary of State in American history.
My wife heard all of this tonight and said, "Do you understand what Trump actually did?
He did not build a powerful administration.
He built an unbreakable one."
Because every single person in it knows what it feels like to have nothing. And people who came from nothing never take anything for granted.
Tonight, say one prayer for this entire administration. And say a bigger one for the man who chose them.

No press release came with it. No phone call. No request for recognition. Only one signature.

Sandra Bullock.

She was thirty-seven. Seven years earlier, *Speed* had transformed a struggling television actress into one of Hollywood's biggest stars, launching a career that would eventually earn an Oscar and more than a billion dollars at the worldwide box office.

While everyone watched the movies, almost no one noticed something else.

She had quietly started writing cheques.

When the Indian Ocean tsunami devastated fourteen countries in 2004, another one-million-dollar cheque arrived at the Red Cross.

When Hurricane Katrina drowned New Orleans in 2005, another followed.

When Haiti collapsed beneath a devastating earthquake in 2010, she sent one million dollars to Doctors Without Borders. The organisation confirmed it.

She said nothing.

The pattern continued.

Japan's earthquake and tsunami in 2011.

Hurricane Harvey in 2017.

California's wildfires in 2018.

Again and again, charities opened their mail to find Sandra Bullock's name attached to extraordinary generosity instead of extraordinary publicity.

Then, for once, a reporter reached her.

He asked why she kept giving. He asked if she wanted to be quoted.

She answered with a single sentence.

"There are no politics in eight feet of water."

That was the entire interview.

By then, the American Red Cross had received millions of dollars from her across some of the worst disasters of the twenty-first century. She never became the face of fundraising campaigns. She never held a press conference.

When people pressed her, her answer barely changed.

"I'm just grateful I can do it."

That outlook had been shaped long before Hollywood.

She spent her childhood in Germany, watching a Europe still rebuilding after war. She worked ordinary jobs for years before fame finally arrived at thirty, learning how much a little help could matter when life felt uncertain.

Success gave her wealth.

It also gave her a plan.

She quietly adopted Louis during the most painful week of her public life. Years later, she adopted Laila, choosing to become the safe place both children could always come home to.

Then life tested her again.

She stepped away from acting to care for Bryan Randall through ALS until his death in 2023.

Since then, she has focused on raising her children, grieving in private, and continuing to help others without asking anyone to notice.

The disasters never stopped.

Neither did the cheques.

Because kindness doesn't become greater when the cameras are watching—it becomes unforgettable when they aren't.
