For some Americans, it can reportedly be cheaper to fly to China, stay in a five-star hotel, get an MRI, and fly home than to undergo the same procedure in the U.S. even with insurance.
In the U.S., an MRI can cost $1,200 to $3,000 or more out of pocket for patients with high deductibles. By comparison, a routine MRI at a public hospital in China can cost around $70. Even after adding an $800 round-trip flight and $300 for a five-star hotel, the total would be roughly $1,200—potentially matching or even beating the cost of an MRI in the U.S. with insurance.
