Twenty years of coronavirus vaccine research and not one of them ever worked. That was the question Professor Angus Dalgleish and his colleagues set out to answer, and they answered it before the world had ever heard the words mRNA vaccine.

I asked him what they found. Coronaviruses change too fast, he said. A wave lasts two to three months and then it's gone, replaced by something different enough that the old antibodies don't recognize it anymore. In the animal models, that mismatch didn't just fail to protect, it made things worse. The antibodies latched onto the new virus without killing it, and instead of blocking the infection, they helped it along. Every model showed the same pattern. In primates, Dalgleish said, it killed them.

That data existed. It was never tested in primates before it went into human arms. When he and his colleagues raised it, they were told the greater good mattered more than the risk. I asked him if he could believe how many of his own colleagues went along with it anyway. He said he was the only one who screamed.
