Melania and I are saddened to hear about Joe Biden’s recent medical diagnosis. We extend our warmest and best wishes to Jill and the family, and we wish Joe a fast and successful recovery.
Yes, Republicans are doing all the atrocious things you mention. But refuse to engage in any compromises with them at all? Without recent compromises negotiated by the two parties the country would have defaulted on its debt, sending interest rates through the roof and global markets plunging. And the federal government would have shut down more than once.
There’s no evidence for saying the temporary change in Trump’s tariff policy constitutes market manipulation. He saw the stock and bond markets crashing, putting the economy on a path to recession or, worse, stagflation. And he took notice of some 70 countries asking to negotiate a mutual reduction or elimination of tariffs. His response—a unilateral temporary reduction of most of the recently announced tariffs, China excepted—seems quite rational.
@cwebbonline Whatever one thinks of Trump’s immigration approach, the reality is that he consistently implemented a restrictive border crossing policy.
Biden, by contrast, didn’t issue his executive order tightening the border until last June, three and a half years into his presidency.
A requirement of birth citizenship under the 14th Amendment is that one must not only be born in the U.S. but must also be “subject to the jurisdiction thereof.”
SCOTUS might well say that children born here of noncitizen immigrant parents aren’t subject to U.S. jurisdiction.
Trump reiterated this morning on Meet the Press that he intends to end birthright citizenship. When told the 14th Amendment says all persons born in the US are citizens, he said, “Well, we’re going to have it changed. We have to end it.”
@cwebbonline With the FBI posting a $50,000 reward for information leading to arrest and conviction of Thompson’s killer I doubt that many people would hesitate to turn him in.
@cwebbonline@JoeNBC In Morning Joe’s announcement here of his and Mika’s meeting with Trump, he explains: “We didn’t see eye to eye on a lot of issues and we told him so.”
It’s hard to see how this can be deemed “normalizing” Trump.

@RossKneeDeep The unnamed person who said “the Civil War was fought over states’ rights” was correct.
The southern states’ attempt to secede from the union and their initiation of the war were motivated by a desire to preserve their “right” as states to perpetuate the institution of slavery.
@RossKneeDeep This view of tariffs omits the reality that these taxes can indeed “choke off foreign countries from selling goods to America” in situations when importers have to reduce their foreign purchases because they are unable to pass along the higher costs to cost-conscious buyers.
@cwebbonline Miller specifically refers here to “migrant killers, gang members, and drug dealers.”
Miller is indeed generally a “vile and disgusting” person. But in this instance I don’t think he’s wrong to call for deportation of the categories of undocumented immigrants he mentions.
@8WithaTiara Here are two of several reasons you “should care if people come here illegally or legally.”
Border control agents are required to check international databases for any criminal activity by immigrants. And immigrants must be screened for Covid and other diseases.
The debate over maintaining friendships with Trump supporters continues unabated.
A friend of mine is a diehard Republican and Trumpist. For many years he has been assisting poor and homeless people by working in soup kitchens. He is the first person to respond when someone he knows is ill or in distress. And he is steadfastly loyal to his many friends—from both parties.
I strongly disagree with his political preferences. But I think that aspect of his belief system is outweighed by his kindness and compassion to others irrespective of their own partisan affiliation.
@EarlOfEnough Democrats didn’t abandon working class voters. It’s the other way around. Many working class voters—voters who helped carry Clinton, Obama and Biden to victory—abandoned the Democratic Party.
We need to understand why and bring them back into the fold.
@cwebbonline Any rare occasion when left-leaning journalists like Joe and Mika are able to meet with a Republican president-elect for a lengthy exchange of differing views should be welcomed by all who hope the two parties moderate their partisan bickering and perhaps find some common ground.

@MORNINGMANIAC In general I have contempt for people who are able to support someone as loathsome as Trump. But in this exceptional instance I’m willing to overlook this person’s mistaken political preferences in light of the kindness he has shown over many years toward others less fortunate.
