Sitting with this one today. I cannot fathom the infinite and words just fall short to describe that connection to the divine. But it doesn’t have to be described - just felt and lived one day at a time.
“The cosmic vision, personalized in Jesus, was an intuition that Francis and many of his followers lived and experienced, but most of them did not formulate it in theological words or academic concepts as much as in lifestyles.” —@RichardRohrOFM https://t.co/zLtohwXjSQ
@BridgetPhetasy Haha…so many movies and songs we watched do not stand the test of time but my memory of them is so childlike! I rewatched Dirty Dancing this winter and saw it through adult eyes. Like you I couldn’t believe we just watched that stuff no big deal.
Growing up with an undiagnosed bipolar mom I fully recognized the lack of structure was harmful. It was just in the past few years I could pinpoint the lack of warmth as a root of some of character defects.
@hubermanlab@tferriss My thinking has evolved to this - that there is enough for everyone and more if we let there be. I used to be highly competitive - basically self-will run riot and ego-driven. It’s a daily practice to turn that over to my higher power.
@hubermanlab Like substance use disorder, bipolar disorder is a chronic illness with relapse/treatment nonadherence rates often estimated around 40–60%. We've made progress, but many foundational treatments are decades old. We can do better!
@hubermanlab Reminder: No one gets to choose their genetics. While I don’t wish the suffering that can come with bipolar on anyone, the traits that cause pain also bring gifts of extraordinary creativity, resilience, and insights.
@dharmalabco Oof…I’m not sure Dan has ever navigated county social services with hold times in excess of 2 hours. That’s next level acceptance. 😉
But yes always an opportunity to become more skillful because it just is.
1st station: "Every person in authority will have to answer to God for the way they exercise their power." Jesus says, "whatever you do to another human being, especially to the small & vulnerable, you do unto me. And it is to me that you will one day give an account."
Thank you for being vulnerable and sharing your story - it’s so brave. It took me until my early 40’s to realize how much trauma had shaped my life.
Therapy can be life changing for those who can afford it. I dream of a world where everyone - particularly the most vulnerable - have access to the support, love, and tools they need to heal.
The best time to lay a foundation of self-compassion & realism in our nervous system maybe have been decades ago-- but it's not our fault we didn't have the modeling & support to do that back then.
The second best time is now.
My daughter just got her masters in social work and she’s aware that might never have the financial ROI that other degrees have. There’s another ROI and that’s doing what feeds your soul while being of service. People shouldn’t have to make that choice.
Graduate degrees in medicine, law and pharmacy generally have the highest return on investment, a report found.
By contrast, advanced degrees in social work and psychology generally do not pay off financially. https://t.co/ZcNWKTuyHw
@BridgetPhetasy Love this. GenX mom here. It’s important for us to stand in the truth of the wisdom we’ve acquired through experience. And to question whatever the f*ck it means to peak. It’s really about the journey of just being human and being fully present to this human experiences.
As a GenX mom I so relate to this piece @BridgetPhetasy. There is wisdom that comes with age, reading books/long-form content, and experiencing the non-digital world. That not everything needs to be documented. In the Midwest,we drank out of hoses in the summer and wore bread bags in our boots in the winter.:)
If you haven’t experienced the gift of the @mnarboretum I highly recommend you put it on your list. It’s such a wealth of beauty and knowledge. The full moon hikes are lovely when the weather cooperates:).
Anger, like every emotion, is just information. An interpretation of what is. It’s a practice for me to not get hooked in the story and when to use it as motivation and when to just let it pass.
People think the goal with anger is to get rid of it. The Dalai Lama taught Dan Goleman differently: "To be skillful with anger, you need to put aside the hostility, the us and them, and preserve the focus it gives you, the motivation it gives you, the persistence it gives you."
