CMake 3.29 is gaining direct support for selecting a linker, but gcc < 12.1 doesn't support -fuse-ld=mold. Some Linux distributions have back-ported a patch for earlier gcc versions to support it, but CMake might not support those.

Sometimes a well-placed assert can be a lifesaver. This little gem has been quietly doing it's job for the last 40 years or so:

When it finally tripped and revealed a subtle bug in the new #dlang support for bitfields:

The assert made this bug easy to track down. Without it, who knows when this problem would have been discovered, and how hard it would have been to track down the source of the problem with failing code.
