It was wonderful to see 93-yr old Sandy Ritchie's reaction when he saw the Book of Deer manuscript in Aberdeen Art Gallery for the first time. As a founding member of the @bookof_deer Project, it meant a lot to him to see it loaned back to NE in summer of 2022.
There is a lot of terrific archaeological work being done across the north of Scotland and the brilliant BBC ALBA documentary “The Missing Monastery” will be on the BBC iPlayer for a few more days until December 20. It’s well worth watching! https://t.co/pTrptVXXpY
...& you don't have to be a historian or archaeologist to appreciate this amazing story of the missing monastery and the Book of Deer. The passion of all those involved beams through.
Also on BBC iPlayer from tonight for 30 days, here: https://t.co/Eh3TJVNX9I

At some point
the monastery vanished, replaced by
the abbey in which you are standing
but always I knew I would find you,
knew when and where the scratchings
of my quill-tip would form into words in your ear.
On World Poetry Day I give you the beautiful poem composed by David Wheatley and gifted to The Book of Deer Project as a response to the "splendid little book" Enjoy!
Here,
I said, placing a finger over
the manuscript, is where two grammars
diverge, enlarging revelation
so that there are two St John
the evangelists now and Seth not Adam
was the first man.
Calling local supporters! There will be an opportunity to visit this year's dig site at Deer Abbey on Tuesday 29th November at 11 am. Derk Jennings will be there to show you round. All welcome!
A joy to be @AdenCountryPark with the @bookof_deer project & @LLAberdeenshire today celebrating a programme of cultural activity around the ancient book’s connections to #Aberdeenshire all made possible by a much appreciated partnership led by enthusiastic local volunteers.
