@a_hussey66 Hi Aaron, you have an interesting perspective. I agree that even if the sound quality is worse the energy of a live show is way better than a recording. I still think that recordings are preferred by many, though, due to the cost of the live performance. #W23POPMUS
@adentremont31#W23POPMUS I agree, recordings are so easy to access, and going to a concert costs money and takes up an evening. I only plan to attend live performances for bands that I am really invested in.
#W23POPMUS I agree with Wald's statement. Most modern popular music is heavily edited in the studio. I've seen live performances where the artist sounds much worse than they do in the recording. I would expect this to be even worse with covers so I usually prefer recordings.
@hanna_przybyla@Nalder01 I think it's unfair to say that the cover songs have no character. The songs were modified intentionally to change the target demographic, and I think this gives them character even if it is a different character from the original song. #W23POPMUS.
@adentremont31#W23POPMUS I agree that changing the lyrics takes away the song's original meaning, but isn't the cover artist embedding their own ideas into the song? In my opinion, many covers have distinct meanings from the original, and these meanings usually still have value.
#W23POPMUS I think the "schlock rock" term is mainly given because the cover artists weren't as skilled as the original ones, and they didn't have the creativity to fully develop their own music. Covers still have value, though, because they can provide a (vastly) new perspective
@butt_lucinda For sure! Without the breaking voice, that part of his songs would be a lot less impactful. It is very easy for the listener to tell which parts of the song are important since the breaking voice draws so much attention to them. #W23POPMUS
@samfollettnl That's very interesting to learn! I wonder if his music would have been as well known if he wasn't a smoker. I guess he is one of the rare cases where his smoking addiction ended up accidentally helping him in some way! #W23POPMUS
#W23POPMUS Using a breaking voice allows Ray Charles to have a distinctive timbre that is easily recognizable. The part of "I've Got a Woman" where his voice is breaking is instantly recognizable to people who have heard the song, even if they may not remember the rest.
@Tyrell_Tapper#W23POPMUS I think your point on computer-generated suggestions is very interesting. I like how streaming services can recommend songs from smaller artists to me, but I also wish companies were more transparent with how their recommendation algorithms work.
@KyleMusseau#W23POPMUS That's a very interesting perspective, and I think that the existence of records for modern music shows that many people agree with you even if the audio quality is not as good. I think part of the appeal is that you have more involvement with the listening experience.
#W23POPMUS Music streaming has made me appreciate pop music from people from different socioeconomic situations. Due to my family's complaints, I didn't think that rap music was "artistic" enough, and before streaming, I didn't own any albums to play to verify what they said.
@Rpomeroy13 I agree that many songs create false needs for wealth and material belongings. I do believe that a lot of popular music is "dumbed down", however, due to the lack of variety. While there are exceptions, many songs seem to use similar structures and lyrics. #W23POPMUS
@CDRSquires I agree Cameron. I dislike many new songs, but I feel left out of many conversations when I don't listen to them. I also agree that a lot of pop music sounds similar. Since I don't listen to music that often I often find it hard to tell new songs apart. #W23POPMUS
#W23POPMUS I think popular music creates a false need for music subscriptions because of how many new songs are released.
I also think the prevalence of autotune has dumbed down popular music because it makes many songs sound similar and hides some artists' poor singing skills.
