This is perhaps optimistic RE: $$ but here's a Lakers free agency mockup.
It'd be a base drop defense group but can play switchy, play bigger, & has good playmaking + spacing.
Rotation of:
Luka (36) | AR (12) | Bronny
AR (24) | Smart (24) | DK
Gillespie (30) | Minott (18) | LaRavia
Collins (27) | Barnes (21) | Thiero
Kessler (30) | Hayes (18) | FRP
Defensive Roles:
POA: Gillespie, Smart, Bronny
Chaser: AR, DK
Wing Stopper: Minott, LaRavia
Helper: Collins, Luka, Barnes, Thiero
Bigs: Kessler, Hayes, FRP
More realistically you probably go Room MLE to Smart, no Barnes, & spread the remaining $$ to Kessler/Gillespie/Collins/Minott.
Offensively, last night was the best Lakers half court game in my Scheme Score metric in 5 months!
56% Organized Offense Rate (good)
80% Coverage Fit (4th best on season)
80% Help Counter Rate (2nd best on season, given volume)
The fewest avg help defenders available (0.95) on sets called in 3 months.
B Shot Making game, so LA shot above their norm.
F Execution Score, meaning the Lakers ePPP was well below what you'd expect given the scheme KPIs above. It's been 6 months since we've seen a lower rating. The possession quality on post/iso plays defended 1v1 was the lowest in months. Same with the ePPP on P&R/DHO sets with good coverage fit. 0.81 ePPP from the freelance offense the worst in 4 months.
1.26 ePPP from the Off-Ball Attacks is the best from LA in months. After a playoffs of JJ's bread & butter being slowly locked down this was a huge resurgence.
9% FT rate when organized is among the worst whistles on the season. 2 of LA's 8 lowest games have come in this series.
At a macro level, this was JJ & Co.'s best game of the playoffs offensively and we saw an ORtg to match.
Things you are not allowed to do vs. the OKC Thunder:
- Box Out
- Draw fouls when you drive
- Dribble up the court without an offensive foul
- Play Defense
Anything else?
Another phantom call in the OKC Lakers game
4 point play for Jaylin Williams as LaRavia does not impact the shot or the landing at all
Trying to figure out where the foul is? We let players hit the hand after the shot all the time.
He also kicks his leg out
Shoutout JJ Redick for the 2 beautifully drawn plays and shoutout to Kennard for doing what he does best.
I cannot believe The Magic blew coverages TWICE
Reaves don’t give a damn if LeBron 41 or 51 he gon throw that lob to bro like he still in Miami every single time, & Bron gon slam that mf every single time 🤣
Austin Reaves’ usage the last 7 games:
18.7 (BOS)
23.2 (ORL)
20.7 (PHX)
20 (GSW)
20.3 (GSW)
24.7 (NOP)
15.5 (DEN)
Reaves with a usage rate < 25% for this long is a major JJ Redick issue, particularly when Reaves is having an All Star campaign in a contract year
suns were literally playing 2 on 1 on the perimeter when Lakers had their bigs on the floor
you are basically watching Gillispee do what Steph does when teams play drop against Draymond
LA will finish at an (unofficial) 62% playcall rate tonight at the time the bench was cleared. 2nd highest of the year.
LA remains undefeated this season in games reaching 55%+.
