How do you secure your assets in Web3? 🔐
Almost everyday I hear a story of someone getting drained and losing all of their hard earned assets.
Take 5 minutes now to read this and start improving your security today!
I'm going to give you 5 tips that if you actually follow, your chances of being drained will go down significantly.
Bookmark this before you lose it!
Let's begin 👇
Tip #1 - NEVER click any new/random links. Majority of scams are spoofed websites mimicking legit ones.
If you often visit the same website, bookmark it or type it in manually, do NOT click links from Google, emails or any other place. It is ALWAYS safer to manually type in the address or click your bookmark.
Trust but verify - If you work in this space you probably get sent many google doc links, whitepapers, websites or random emails with links.
If you have been working with someone for a long time usually it is fine to trust it, but you should ALWAYS verify. Check the link carefully and ensure it is going to the correct website, verify the sender account is correct, the best practice is to type the link in manually.
Accounts can be hacked, so you cannot always just trust, you must verify the account authenticity and everything you click. Be extremely careful with any site asking for your wallet signature, prompting a transaction or a friend randomly asking for some money.
If you see a link get posted for a free claim/airdrop or something else that sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Do not sign anything unless you are 100% sure the link is safe and you verified it through multiple channels.
Tip #2 - Add notes to the discord bots that you often use.
Go to a discord server that YOU trust, or create your own discord and add the bot you want to mark (Pandez, Vulcan, Mee6, etc).
Click on the bot and at the bottom of it's profile you will see "NOTE" under here add in the word "Trusted" or write anything, these notes will appear on the bot's profile in any server that you join.
This will make it extremely easy to know whether the bot is a fake in a new server.
(Extra tip - don't interact with new bots that are not commonly used unless you know 100% they are safe)
See picture below for where to add the note:
Tip #3 - Use security apps like @PocketUniverseZ, this particular extension scans every single contract interaction you do with your wallet and does a security analysis on the spot.
They are so confident that they can protect you that they are offering up to 20K insurance if you use their app and still get scammed on one of the trusted sites that they have added.
You're playing on hard mode if you don't use a security app as they make understanding transactions extremely simple and can protect you from scams you didn't know were even happening.

I have personally been using this for years and very happy with the results.
Tip #4 - Practice proper wallet management. I use 3 types of wallets:
1 - Hot wallets - These are ones you use daily for minting, trading, whatever you need to interact with regularly. (Do not keep large set of funds here)
2 - Semi hot wallets - These have NFTs I'm holding but I ONLY connect these to trusted websites from the team to claim tokens/participate in any activity that particular team is hosting. (I don't keep funds here either)
3 - Cold wallet - This should be secured by hardware (@Ledger, )
This is a wallet you use just for storage of your valued assets, there should be NO interactions with this wallet whatsoever, and it is basically like your crypto savings account, only used for inbound transfers, and outbound if you need it.
I personally use Ledger, but whichever you use please make sure you are using it properly.
Best practice is to setup your wallet through their respective app and do NOT connect this wallet to any website or app.
IF for some reason you are importing your hardware wallet to your browser, NEVER use the private key. Always connect directly to your wallet (Metamask, Rabby, etc) There is an option to connect a hardware device.
Tip #5 - Do not download or install any unnecessary apps/programs/games to your computer or phone.
If you want to try a new web3 game or app that isn't listed on an official platform such as Epic games, Steam, Microsoft/Google Play store, etc I wouldn't recommend downloading it unless you really trust the team with all of your assets because it just takes one malicious update from one of the devs to steal all of your information.
If you guys are interested I can post a guide on how to create an isolated system (sandbox environment) on your computer where your files and data will be safe from applications.
For now, please go through all the programs/app you have installed and removes ones you are not actively using and try to keep your system as clean and debloated as possible.
Security is your own responsibility and while they are tools that can help you stay secure, there is nothing that will protect you 100% as most scams are social engineered, so YOU need to be aware at all times.
Everyone makes mistakes, but if you follow these tips and regularly practice them, the chances of you making a mistake that will cost you are extremely low.
Let me know if you learnt anything new and if you have any questions feel free to ask!
