Developers are ditching local dev setups for cloud AI coding boxes today. Here's what you need to know.

Matt Pocock, a well known TypeScript educator, posted on X on August 22, 2026 that he's moving away from his local dev setup, saying it makes zero sense to him anymore. The post hit 385.8K views and pulled in hundreds of replies from developers picking sides.

Many replied that they've already switched. Andrew Grosner said 95% of his pull requests now come from Cognition's cloud agent Devin, about a 6x jump in weekly PRs versus his old local-agent workflow. Others described running coding agents on VPS boxes, home servers, or spare Mac minis so tasks keep running after they close their laptop.

Not everyone agrees. Some devs said a beefy local machine, like a 96GB Mac Studio, still works great, and that platform-locked work like iOS development is much harder to do remotely. The debate tracks a bigger industry shift toward AI coding agents.
