We are delighted that Sean McManus will be joining us in the bookshop on Saturday to chat and sign copies of his new novel, Teeth of the Conger - not to be missed!
@ViaerFou@guernseyliz14@richarddigard In the 1950s when I'm struggling now to think what the school leaving age was but it was possibly 14? But back then the main role was the 3 Rs. Everything else other than academic and games such as sex education, political indoctrination etc was left to the parent
Guernsey's fiscal problems began with Zero-10, and they won't be solved until the States have the guts to address the root cause of the issue. Inflicting more pain on the middle class will not solve the problem; it will only drive away more young people who see no future here.
I agree brilliant interview and the first one, so refreshing to hear about a positive attitude towards prisoners. I so hope what she was trying to achieve is maintained. But so sad to hear of her ( feeling of?) lack of support.
However it gives the time to consider alternatives whilst getting some extra income to deal with the issues identified by the last few P and R committees.
Deputy Trott as an experienced States member will be fully aware he and the current States cannot tie the next States down to a temporary 22% income tax rise for two years. A Requete or States Report could be before the new States in July 2025, less than a year to revert to 20%
Have to say, it seems ( on first consideration) a sensible move.....hopefully the tax office can cope ....should just be a tweak to the computer programme....
The personal rate of income tax will increase by 2% as a temporary measure for two years, under proposals for the 2025 Budget. However, P&R is also proposing several measures to protect and support lower and middle earners.

Sadly, the current plan will be really expensive and I'm worried that might mean that the added investment needed...particularly in providing sufficient support to staff to help those pupils at both ends of the academic spectrum......Will not be forthcoming.
@YvonneBurford@LeonieLeTissier@PeterRoffey5@jviddy@ValeBeryl@pvbsc1@richarddigard@JEPnews If the Review had been completed it would have been clear the 11-18 2SM was the best option educationally & financially. CfESC came to realise that but didn't want to alienate those islanders who opposed the model. So the Committee proposed abandoning the Review.
Apartments are a possibility....but not if they're above ground floor with no lift access. To future proof for older people ( of which I count myself as one) lift access is essential.
Or possibly, having watched the Tories constantly denigrate them for, amongst other things, achieving nothing whilst in opposition ( strange that...???) they are reflecting back Tory behaviour
@implausibleblog Strange, so far thereโs been few speeches statements policies etc which havenโt mentioned the Tories. Playground antics are neither big nor clever. Similar to a divorcee out with a new partner continually banging on about their ex. Obviously nothing interesting to say or offer.
There are a few tickets left for this afternoon if you fancy an afternoon of wordy fun. Iโve come to the penultimate show of this tour: thank you to all of you whoโve joined me over the past few years. Now I just need to write a new one..
I can absolutely see the benefit of teaching languages but @deputyrobward is right - there are other priorities. Why do we not see more demands for teaching kids valuable skills they will use in their lives and careers, such as how to handle social media and other digital skills?
A school friend sent me this today.
I do not know:
*Where I amโฆ
*How old I amโฆ
*Who half these people areโฆ
*Why the boys are wearing shirtsโฆ
*Am I even enjoying myself?
All a mystery!
I do however know the dress is from warehouse ๐
