Actress Kim Ji Won is returning to the small screen after more than two years of waiting. After receiving immense love for her role as third-generation chaebol heiress Hong Hae In in Queen of Tears, her next role is a genius surgeon. Leaving behind the glamorous chaebol world and moving the stage to the operating room, Kim Ji Won is preparing for a transformation completely different from her previous work.

Kim Ji Won will play Gye Soo Jeong in SBS’s new drama #DoctorX :Age of the White Mafia (hereafter Doctor X).

This marks Kim Ji Won’s return to television dramas approximately two years after tvN’s Queen of Tears in 2024. At the time, she portrayed Hong Hae In, the department-store CEO of Queens Group. She captivated audiences with her portrayal of a haughty and cool-headed third-generation chaebol heiress, as well as Hae In's vulnerable side when it came to love, helping drive the drama’s success.

Queen of Tears became another turning point in Kim Ji Won’s career as an actress. Not only did it achieve high ratings in Korea, but it also gained popularity overseas, making Kim Ji Won’s name widely known to viewers both in Korea and abroad.

After completing such a hit drama, Kim Ji Won took a relatively long break rather than rushing to release her next project. The work she chose after approximately two years is the medical noir “Doctor X.”

This time, it is difficult to find any trace of chaebol executive Hong Hae In. Gye Soo Jeong, played by Kim Ji Won, is a surgeon with exceptional surgical skills. As a character who moves boldly within the hospital, relying on her abilities, she differs from her role in Queen of Tears not only in character but also in genre.

Playing a doctor is also a new challenge for Kim Ji Won. Having demonstrated her strengths in romantic comedies and melodramas, it will be another point of interest to see what kind of performance she delivers as she takes center stage in the medical genre.

The difference between Hong Hae-in and Gye Soo Jeong is also striking in the released photos. In Queen of Tears, Kim Ji Won wore her long, straight hair with glamorous accessories and tailored suits, creating the sophisticated, urban image befitting a department-store CEO from a chaebol family. In Doctor X, on the other hand, she sports a short bob that reaches her jawline, paired with blue surgical scrubs and a white doctor's coat. The understated styling and neat appearance create a noticeably different impression from her previous role.

Her charitable work connected to the new project has also come to light. Kim Ji Won recently donated ₩100 million to Seoul National University Children’s Hospital. It is said that her experience encountering the medical field while preparing for and filming Doctor X led to the donation.

Kim Ji Won has built an impressive list of representative works by taking on different characters in each project, including Fight for My Way, My Liberation Notes, and Queen of Tears. Among them, Hong Hae In in Queen of Tears was the character that once again propelled Kim Ji Won to the height of her career.
