Coursebooks in ELT have their limitations, and teachers need to bring in other resources to supplement their lessons.

Coursebooks in ELT:
- A valuable language reference resource
- Activities to help students revise and constantly recycle language they have covered previously.
- They give logical structure to the course. Activities become increasingly challenging to reflect students' progress

They are also:
- written for a general audience and may not be specifically relevant to the needs of a particular group of learners.
- Some topics may be unsuitable for certain learners.
- Topics can date quickly.

To help students sound more fluent when they speak, it would be useful to encourage them to notice hesitation markers, vague language, use of stress and intonation and words to show interest.

There should be more emphasis on raising students' awareness of spoken discourse features, as it's part of improving their own speaking skills.
Show students the transcript of a listening text they had listened to, and ask them:

Find expressions the speakers used to show interest?
