Educator, Tax expert, & technology magician. Spending time on #TaxTwitter reminding people about the need for security in their processes and all tech costs.
@JWellsTax@Tyler_Menzer@jasononfirms@LoganGrafTax Thanks, @JWellsTax. @Tyler_Menzer - feel free to reach out or message. I am a Professor at Pitt with my research concentration on accounting tech and security and I am a third generation firm owner. Would have no problem chatting with your student.
I can't believe I'm actually posting this...
Three days from now, I'll be on my way to Geneva to participate in the United Nations Global Dialogue on AI Governance. This is the first time the UN has convened governments, scientists, and academics globally to discuss international cooperation on AI, share best practices and lessons learned, and have the kind of open, honest conversations about governance that should have started years ago. And I get to be in the room. Me. The guy from New Stanton, PA.
I'm still trying to figure out how I got here. Honestly, the short answer is Pitt Business. The longer answer is that AI governance has become something I care about so deeply, even going back to 2015 when Travel Development Group was deploying AI solutions for our clients. Even then, the need for governance, security, and safeguards was essential.
AI governance isn't an abstract policy anymore. It's urgent and growing. Too many businesses are treating AI like a toy with little to no consequences, and too many governments are treating it like a race. Neither angle ends well. The gap between capability and accountability is widening every day. Someone has to be in the room asking the harder questions.
I'll be sharing thoughts, reactions, and updates throughout the event, whether they be good, complicated, or whatever. See you there.

@CrownCPA Honestly, I just view it as the presenter harming their own brand/image and I will not attend an event or session they lean again. I keep a list.
Thanks, sir. I can honestly say this was a harder decision than when I sold my software company 10 years ago.
The direction so many people are taking is a very dangerous path and I just canโt support it.
But itโs still my passion so the folks in InCite wonโt be able to escape it entirely. Haha
I guess I'm just sitting here asking why. This would handle Federal, but what about states, or even ptet? This would de-couple the tax software from the version of truth of the current state of the return.
PTE extensions, at least to me, are quick and simple. There are much more universally beneficial things I would rather see the IRS work on.
Oh absolutely. The entire process needs to be taken into account. But for the amount we paid in fees last year, we couldโve hired a full-time admin year-round, making 2-3x what minimum wage is.
Not the idea of perfect set up in any direction, but we still favor checks in cash. I will also say that the majority of our client base is still very very local.
@cordes_tax It is mostly functional, but definitely not pretty. They need to hire a team of Gen Z interns and pump them fuel of Mountain Dew for a few weeks to get that interface up to par.
