How many elderly women do you have to hurt if you are a migrant before you end up in prison?

Another shocking care home case involving a migrant. This one is from Yemen.

An 85 year old woman was suffering from dementia and in a care home in North Lincolnshire.

Dementia is already a difficult illness, it strips someone of their dignity and privacy.

Malek Alshabi, a 53 year old from Yemen, was working as an agency care worker. On 16 March this year he attempted to rape the elderly woman in her bed.

The attack was captured on CCTV and staff were alerted by a motion detector that was installed to let them know if a resident fell or got out of bed at night.

Police were called and Alshabi was easily identified.

Yet, this was not his first offence. In April 2024, just two years earlier, Alshabi was convicted of wilful mistreatment of a 93 year old woman at a different care home in Sheffield, that left the woman injured.

He received a 9 month prison sentence, suspended for two years. So not a single day in prison. If he had been put in prison, he would never have been able to rape the woman in North Lincolnshire.

Despite having this criminal record, he was easily able to secure another care worker role with an agency and hence in the position to be able to rape the 85 year old.

He pleaded guilty to rape and was sentenced in June 2026 to 9 years in prison and 3 years on extended licence. Nothing about deportation. He will not be allowed to work with vulnerable adults again, but who knows if this will actually be enforced on his release.
