New Chickadee paper! Over a lifetime of studying chickadees and tits (family Paridae) @CognitiveEcol noticed that females are often smaller than males within breeding pairs, even though male-female size distributions usually overlap.
Now published in @AnimBehSociety, we set out to test whether this anecdotal observation was real and whether it was driven by mate choice or environmental effects.
"Waking up the next morning and finding that food store is the difference between life and death for these birds."

Check out our new paper in Current Biology! We show there’s a genetic basis of spatial cognitive abilities in those very clever mountain chickadees! A true collaboration with @CognitiveEcol @Dr_Scott_Taylor https://t.co/VDQt4vhW2q
A few follow-up photos of our odd depigmented male Mountain chickadee.
The loss of pigment was asymmetrical as you can easily see in the tail.
