The future of farming 🥬☀️
Great tour with Boreal Farms' founder, Brandon, in the heart of #KingTownship at this one-acre farm and #STEM summer camp. They teach kids how to harness the sun and technology to grow fresh crops in small/urban spaces.
That includes renewable energy to power the robots that water the crops -- a sustainable partnership with @stem_minds !
Excited to welcome Premier @fordnation to #Aurora!
Proud to announce our government is investing $293,800 in @stem_minds’ Future of Food and Farming project, training 150 jobseekers for thriving careers in agri-tech.

Coca-Cola and PepsiCo Canada were absent from today's meeting with Minister Champagne, which may not have been the wisest choice, given that many Canadians are currently scrutinizing the integrity of food companies. https://t.co/4HWHmGuqZ5
Hot take: The next round of automation and AI will disproportionately impact the laptop class, not the working class. It's now cheaper to automate accountants, contract lawyers, and data analysts than it is to automate manual laborers.
Big ramifications for US social structures.
Thread: A threat to American strawberries.
Plant City is the Winter Strawberry Capital of the US. It's also my hometown. We've grown strawberries for 100 years and supply 20% of US production. It's a $1.1 billion industry for a town of 40k.
That's all under threat. 1/n
Women weren't allowed to run the Boston Marathon

Can anyone in the White House do fourth-grade math? The value of Putin's gold reserves (2,300 metric tonnes) went up about $3.0 billion in the past 30 minutes. The so-called sanctions are making Russia rich.
What would a shut down or disruption in the Black Sea mean?
#Ukraine wheat exports set for a record year and they provide a large amount of the world's coarse grains and corn.
This is unfortunately the beginning. Global grain stocks are low due to bad harvests. Rising prices for fertilizer and pesticides are forcing farmers to cut back on inputs which will decrease the 2022 harvest.
These trends suggest it'll likely be 2024 before prices stabilize.
Food security is national security.
Food insecurity is a catalyst for social upheaval.
In the developing world, this looks like famine and revolution.
In the developed world, it looks like rising food prices and surging populist movements.
It’s about to get real y’all.
While combat in Ukraine is raging that could compromise 15% of the world’s tradable grain, water scarcity is threatening the US supply of fresh fruits and vegetables.
Rising food prices this year are locked in. Expect at least 10% food price inflation by midterms.
Fertilizer prices spiked ~40% in Q1 2021.
6-9 months later, food price inflation hit.
In Q4 2021, fertilizer prices doubled.
Food price inflation is likely to be ~10% by Aug and 15% by end of 2022.
Calling it now: food and energy prices will be *the* midterm issue.
Rising food prices are socially destabilizing.
In rich countries, rising food prices harm economic growth as consumer spending declines.
In poor countries, rising food prices triggers waves of hunger and unrest.
2022 is proving that food security is national security.

There are weird things happening in the US nitrogen market. Urea NOLA prices before Christmas hovered around $800/ton. Then the prices unexpected plummeted and are consistently hovering between $550-600/ton. No one really knows why. 1/n
Natural gas is the top expense for nitrogen makers. Yara is its largest. 76% of its revenue are feedstock (cost of material) related for past decade. In other words, it was able to pass on higher energy prices. This is why Nitrogen prices adjust to energy prices without delays.
