Chinas mightiest river is now making a wonderful comeback thanks to extraordinary efforts of rejuvenation.
The 6300 kilometer Yangtze River, running from the Tibetan Plateau to Shanghai, was very polluted from sewage and industrial waste. Fish and dolphins went extinct. Then China decided to act.
Now the Yangtze is back from the brink. Fish biomass has increased by 200%. Scientists have observed rare types of surgeons breeding. 1400 finless porpoises live in the upper basins, a huge increase. The river is much cleaner and less polluted.
The world should take note. There are importantly lessons learned for the Mekong, the Ganga and so many other rivers.
Here is what China did:
* Ten years fishing ban in the Yangtze
* Stopping pollutants flowing into the river, relocating industries, improving sewage
* Planting forests at the rivers and its tributaries, binding soil
* Making big cities along the Yangtze “sponge” cities, addding wetlands and greenery
Nothing is rocket science - we can all learn!
