"Esther (not real name) was rushed to the hospital as a result of gastrointestinal bleeding.
What led to that?
She was taking an NSAID (diclofenac) for back pain. She went to her friend's place who happened to also have the same issue. Her friend told her, “I use this drug (ibuprofen) and my pain goes away”. Esther buys the same drug. She used both diclofenac and ibuprofen for about 2 weeks. Then the real problem began. The next thing she remembers is, there were blood stains on her stool, then she was in the hospital.
Now,
What’s the best way to use NSAIDs (e.g diclofenac, ibuprofen, Felvin, etc) so it doesn’t cause ulcers, gastrointestinal bleeding, or any harmful side effects?
1. Use it when it’s prescribed.
2. Eat before you make use of NSAIDs. Don’t take NSAIDs on an empty stomach.
3. Take the lowest effective dose over the shortest possible period.
4. Don’t take two NSAIDs together. The risks outweighs the benefits.
5. Don’t take an NSAID together with a steroidal (corticosteroid) medication. Example of steroidal medications include dexamethasone, prednisolone.
6. If you’re living with hypertension, any heart disease, kidney disease, be careful with NSAIDs. Very careful.
7. Don’t abuse DRUGs.
I will break it down the more so you understand the points better."
