@ConallMoore5 Tolerant only means just that. The longer an infect aphid feeds on a crop the more virus it transmits. An intolerant variety would most like die or at least be 50% down on yield in the same scenario whereas a tolerant variety will only reduce yield by 10-20%.
AHDB Recommended List W Barley variety trial up and away nicely down here in Dorset. Always nice having a trial like this on a farm you look after to see side by side comparisons through the season
This farm has very low fixed costs so we can use a 1 year cover crop as a break. What frustrates me is this is doing so much for the environment yet there is no option for it in SFI. Personally I think it’s much more valuable than a 2 year legume fallow.
@tomallenstevens@farmerphil76 Could be Clover Leaf Weevil or Pea and Bean Weevil as P+B weevils will have hatched now and feed on clover until they go to their overwintering sites.
@Tamblyn_Ben Interesting. Opposite to what I’m finding. Extase is looking pretty dirty compared with Graham. I think races are certainly more localised than we think. Sundance is a 👍 variety but Spec weight put people off much like Theodore which is unbelievably clean even in untreated.
@cutlerstom@MrAgrologist@DefraGovUK As far as I’m aware they aren’t taking about banning liquid urea only solid. So this shouldn’t affect UAN or foliars.
@EdCTBrown @johnkempf Herbicide stacks I’m sure are linked to aphid issues in cereals. You are putting the plant through a huge amount of stress early on when it has very little ability to cope.
@GeorgeMonbiot A cow is living and part of the carbon cycle. You can’t separate out her contribution to sequestration. A car just emits. The cows are helping sequester the car’s emissions. On this they are given no credit for that, and a disproportionate share of “estimated costs”
@GeorgeMonbiot Come on George. That’s not research, that’s campaigning:
• they look at emissions not sequestration
• Germany alone as an European comparator
• presumes deforestation for soya is for animal feed, not for human use with animal feed byproducts
• this is nonsense:
Mid Sept drilled OSR post S Bar, 10kg Umo down the spout. No Roundup which makes for interesting / scary weed burden but the crop got away. I find it helps a lot with CSFB deterrence (Vol Bar especially helpful but needs to be taken out before too much competition)
DD linseed into wheat stubble, good root and shoot growth so far. Tissue samples taken as I suspect that Mg deficiency is starting to occur in some areas as it often does with linseed. At the moment it is unlikely this block will need an early N app so maybe only 80kg/N needed
Graham coming up well in the white clover living mulch. Drilled with a Moore unidrill on the 14th Sep, so far very hard to see aphids. In comparison a block of oats emerging a few fields over that has plenty in.
Very interesting to see that these very acidic areas of the field have been destroyed by Turnip Sawfly Larvae. Certainly evidence that pests are attracted to unhealthy plants as the natural defences are struggling.
