@SquigglyVolcano Highly unlikely that a change in static stress due to EQ could trigger activity, but dynamic stress from passing seismic waves could have an effect, especially if the system was already active.
Cathartic and encouraging that on a day when I learned of so much bad news regarding science and education in this country, I was able to attend the Stand Up for Science rally on Arizona’s campus.
Add to the lengthening “things are not ok” list…
“DOGE Is Trying to Shutter Crucial Volcano Observatory Facilities”
This includes the TEMPORARY home of HVO- only in a leased building because the old facility was *checks notes* destroyed by a volcano

Policies aside, the thing I miss the most from the Biden administration is never worrying about incompetent and haphazard policy implementation sending me and half the country into an existential crisis for 24 hours every week...
Partner is remote for USGS. My job is 100% soft money. I was applying to federal jobs. Federal return to office order means we need to move. Hiring freeze means jobs I want may not be filled. Pause on federal grants withholds money I depend on for salary. So, that’s my week…
If more volcanoes were actively monitored, "it may change our understanding of how to read the warning signs," says @columbiaclimate@LamontEarth volcanologist @einatlev1. On Costa Rica's active Poás volcano, Lev's team and OVSICORI have done just that: https://t.co/AvAgcjUjIO
#ICYMI - Our Virtual Public Lecture last week by Katie Mulliken, "Six Eruptions at Two Volcanoes Over the Past Three Years - How the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory monitors some of Earth’s most active volcanoes" is now available online: https://t.co/kHhvIPe573

Today’s #VolcanoWatch remembers James Puupai Kauahikaua, who passed away on Oct. 8. “Jim K” was a pioneering volcanologist and the first Kānaka Maoli (indigenous Hawaiian) Scientist-in-Charge of HVO. His passion and dedication are an inspiration.

@Linneaslab @SophieCarrPhoto Yeah. Not a piloting experience I'd like to repeat... I don't understand why the helicopters are unconcerned about drones when they go low. I suppose rotor wash would take care of a mavic before it ever hit the aircraft, but the M300s flown by scientists surely pose a risk?
@Vedurstofan@almannavarnir Scientists say the #earthquakes are getting stronger and the progress is similar to the start of the eruption last summer. The likelihood of the magma reaching the surface in coming days increasing.
#Kilauea is currently erupting from the #Halemaumau summit crater. HVO will be releasing an update soon. USGS livestream is showing the action. https://t.co/jAcOUDIHjq #Hawaii#lava#eruption
It’s the last day of #iavcei2023 and it’s finally time for my talk! Come by session 16D after lunch today to see some cool drone-derived data from the Fagradalsfjall eruptions!
Thank you to all my friends for your encouragement before my talk and everyone I spoke with afterwards who came up to discuss ideas or just say they enjoyed the talk. It’s great to be part of such a supportive and enthusiastic scientific community!
