On this day in history in 1778, the Liberty Bell was safely transported from Allentown, Pennsylvania, back to
Independence Hall in Philadelphia.

Upon its return, the Bell rang for the funeral of Chief Justice John Marshall in 1835, widening its famous crack. The crack grew beyond repair during George Washington’s Birthday celebrations in 1846. It is tapped on Independence Day by the descendants of the Declaration of Independence signers.
