Pick up one of these ants in Kenya and it costs about 77 cents. Carry that same ant to Europe and a collector will pay around $200 for it. The same bug, marked up more than 250 times. That gap is the whole reason this trade exists.

The $200 buys something much bigger than one insect. The ants worth that kind of money are queens of the giant African harvester ant. One queen that has already mated can start a whole colony by herself and keep it going for as long as 25 years. Pay for her once, and she turns out thousands of workers over the next two decades with no help at all. Collectors keep her in a clear tank made for watching the colony build and feed itself. The buyer is really paying for twenty years of colony from a single ant in a test tube.

The bag in this case held 2,238 of them, about $1,700 worth at Kenyan prices. Get that same bag to Europe and it sells for hundreds of thousands of dollars. A bigger bust last year carried 5,440 queens. Kenyan prosecutors valued them at $9,300 at home, and around $1.27 million once they reached buyers overseas. That works out to $233 a head.

The fines have not come anywhere close to those numbers. The man caught here was told to pay 1 million shillings, about $7,700, or spend a year in jail. Four others caught the year before paid the same $7,700 each, and the ones from abroad just flew home. One bag that makes it through is worth many times that. For the people running this, the fine is just the cost of losing a bag now and then.

This is the same business that used to mean ivory and rhino horn, shrunk down to something that fits in a test tube. One 2023 study counted nearly 59,000 ant colonies sold online in China alone. Every queen in that luggage would have spent the next twenty years building a colony worth far more than the 77 cents she sold for.
