@AmyCEdmondson Love this question. I’ve found it can be even more inclusive and enhance psychological safety when asked: “who can offer another perspective?” Sometimes, even adding … “even if it’s not yours.”
@AmyCEdmondson@tom_geraghty Awesome! I just did a timeline too. As Schein/Bennis refer to unfreezing & learning anxiety in the face of change, they build on Kurt Lewin. Maybe add him? Tangentially, I include Donald Winnicott’s work on “holding environments” too (& Bill Kahn, Ron Heifetz, & @gpetriglieri).
@gpetriglieri This whole saga highlights the need for leaders who lead with holding and caring, beyond acting as generals, prophets, heroes, etc. - especially in times of crisis and change.
@tom_geraghty Great question/discussion. Some US orgs/military use the phrase “mission first, people always” (idk a source) - I wonder if the order is right, or matters? This also relates to psych safety of course, especially a “power over” person’s role to build a “holding environment”too.
“If not now, when? If not you, who?” asks @DrTinaOpie in this powerful TEDx talk & framework inviting us all to consider the shared responsibilities we have and the roles we can play individually and collectively in erasing racism and injustice in our systems and organizations.
@DanielCoyle What about @FrancesFrei and @annemorriss? Their amazing work - including on trust, empathy, and belonging - overlaps with your insights on culture too, including seeing culture as “care” and living relationships working toward a shared goal.
Compassion isn't a cause of burnout. It's a source of energy.
Data: Being kind to others can reduce cynicism. Being kind to yourself can lessen exhaustion. Kindness restores belonging, control, & confidence.
The times when you need a hand are often the best times to extend one.
@skominers@IanMikutel@Microsoft Thanks so much, Ian. I appreciate the curiosity and offer to listen too! I’m happy to connect and add more insights if it’s helpful. Feel free to DM me as well.
