Birchenough's smart weighbridge with a manual twist
Welcome to the legendary Birchnough Bridge on the Masvingo-Mutare Highway, the gateway to Mutare and Mozambique, and a masterclass in technological contradiction.
They have a smart, necessary system in place, a modern weighbridge. It's there for a great reason that is to protect the unique, pillar-less bridge from overloaded trucks. A heavy vehicle gets precisely weighed and, if it passes, is granted a digital clearance.
But then comes the plot twist that defies all logic...
Once that 40-tonne truck gets its 21st-century "all-clear," it must then join a queue and wait for a gentleman to manually lift an iron boom gate.
We have the advanced technology to weigh a massive vehicle with digital precision, but we can't install a simple automatic gate that could read the "PASS" slip or scan the number plate to let it through instantly.
A little automation after the weighbridge could ease the traffic, save time, and truly bring this vital gateway into the modern era.

The winning article exposed the deep-seated factionalism within Zaka Rural District
Council, highlighting the contentious appointment of senior officials.
The threatening buffalo that had roamed Zaka's Murembwa area since August was finally tracked down and killed on October 27. This decisive action, however, came only after villagers' repeated complaints had failed to yield an official response.
The critical turning point was an article by TellZim News, which publicly exposed the danger and the prior inaction of the authorities.
A Masvingo Chicks vehicle collided with a stationary Rujeko Primary School bus at Pick n Pay Masvingo this afternoon (October 10). The newly bought Rujeko bus was dangerously parked along the entrance road, obstructing the passage of other vehicles. The accident happened as the Masvingo Chicks van attempted to maneuver around the improperly parked bus. The scene caused congestion at the supermarket's parking lot. How the school bus and the heavy vehicle found their way into the parking lot which is for smaller vehicles remains a mystery.
