It is not a recreation or simulation. Not AI.

It is a real 911 call made by a very real and utterly terrified woman as she began to understand that help might not reach her. You are hearing the voice of Melissa Cándida Doi during the final hour of her life.

At 9:17 a.m., Melissa called 911 from the 83rd floor of the World Trade Center’s South Tower. United Airlines Flight 175 had struck the building only 14 minutes earlier.

Melissa, a senior manager at IQ Financial Systems, had turned 32 just ten days before. She and several others were trapped by smoke and unbearable heat.

“The floor’s completely engulfed. We’re on the floor and we can’t breathe, and it’s very, very, very hot.”

For approximately 24 minutes, 911 dispatcher Barnes remained on the telephone, trying to keep Melissa calm and assuring her that firefighters were coming.

“Can you stay on the line with me, please? I feel like I’m dying.”

Firefighters were climbing toward her. Battalion Chief Orio Palmer and his men reached the 78th floor, only five floors below Melissa, but time ran out.

Knowing she might not survive, Melissa gave the dispatcher her mother’s name and telephone number. She left one final message:

“Tell my mother that I love her and that she is the best mom in the whole world.”

At 9:59 a.m., the South Tower collapsed. Melissa’s remains were identified three years later.

She was a daughter, a friend, a colleague and one of the 2,977 people murdered that day.

Remember her name: Melissa Cándida Doi.
