I live in Michigan, in the U.P. Mackinac is literally 2 hours from me and Abdul is spot on. Mackinac is tourist island marketed to “higher-value” out-of-state visitors where you have to pay just to get there.

Mackinac Island gets nearly 1 million tourists a year despite having fewer than 600 permanent residents, and its tourism marketers specifically target affluent out-of-state markets because those visitors stay longer. A three-night Mackinac trip for two priced independently by the City of Midland came to $6,161.

Mackinac Island is beautiful. But pretending an expensive tourist destination represents the everyday lives of working Michiganders is exactly the kind of politics Abdul is running against.
