In preparation for this retreat, I've been pondering what practices and perspectives are most needed by meditators today and what topics I'm uniquely suited to teach. These inquiries keep pointing me to the following theme:
Awakening & Responsibility: How meditation leads to effective action
Here are some highlights of what to expect!
- Guided meditations on Trustworthiness, Integrity, Your Life's Mission, Decision Making, Internal Family Systems, and more
- Lectures on the Facets of Happiness, Effort & Ease, Practice Structure, and more
- One-on-one interviews with me to get personalized inspiration and support (optional)
- Morning and evening yoga and Tai Chi classes (optional)
- Meditator super-friends : )
The weeklong retreat will run from May 31st - June 5th and take place at the @omega_institute in Rhinebeck, NY (2 hours north of NYC).

About The Omega Institute
The Omega Institute is one of the most well-known and respected retreat centers in America and it's a honor to partner with them. Started in 1977, Omega has hosted Ram Das, Pema Chodron, Thich Nhat Hanh, Allen Ginsberg, and countless other great teachers of our time.
Located on 250 acres, the campus includes miles of forest trails, a lake (you can use their kayaks!), a full-service spa (you can get a massage in the middle of retreat!), vegetable and flower gardens, hidden sanctuaries, sculpture installations, the Omega Center for Sustainable Living (a green building that contains a chemical-free water reclamation system), a bookstore, and a cafe.
A Personal Note
Partnering with Omega for this retreat is a milestone in my journey as a teacher. Many of you have been with me for years, and honestly, it would mean the world to have you there in the room.
Please let me know if you have any questions or comments. I hope to see you there!

Happy birthday @brightmind_app! 8 years ago today, we launched on the @AppStore, received the New Apps We Love Award from @Apple, and got 30,000 downloads in a few days. I was so pumped! I still remember pressing the release button with my co-founder, Christian. We popped champaign! It's been an honor to support everyone's practice and cultivate a global community over the years. Here's to another 8 years!
Registration Open! Shinzen Young’s The Science of Enlightenment Online Course.
While running last year's cohort, I got a strong hit of "damn, this is exactly what I should be doing with my life". The course really is a culmination of my life's work. You will not be disappointed!
This year's cohort is already looking like a rad group. You'll no doubt leave the course with friendships based on shared values and an accelerated meditation practice.

This practice completely changed how I make decisions. Nowadays, if I have a decision that is either important or complex (only has to check one of those boxes), I go through this process. Enjoy!
Spring 4-Day Retreat registration now open! Designed to support all experience levels, the flexible retreat includes both Technique Instruction periods and one-on-one interviews with me (Toby). May 15-18. Spots start at $300. Join us/tell a friend!

An honor and joy to help out last weekend at @danbharris, @realjeffwarren, and Sebene Selassie’s Meditation Party at the @omega_institute. Meditation + dance party (feat. DJ DRM) = happiness 🤘🤘
1/x Announcing The Science of Enlightenment Online Course!
If you don't already know, much of what I present in Brightmind is based on an approach to meditation developed by @ShinzenYoung.
I had way too much fun hanging with @realjeffwarren and @TashaTheAmazon!
We chew on some tasty mini-meditation snacks – yum yum! We then get all Jedi-mind and try splitting our attention between chatting and meditating. Finally, we explore an inventive and beautiful practice of nurturing our own sense of trustworthiness. All of these are ways of highlighting the basic creativity of meditation, how we can mix and match the core skills to build practices that work for us.

I’m pleased to announce that I will be teaching via @sangha_live, a global online platform for interactive dharma classes and courses, on Sunday, June 16.
I’ve been invited to lead their weekly, live “Sunday Sangha” program. This online class includes guided meditation, dharma talk, and an interactive Q&A, and is offered on dana/generosity-basis.
During this session, we will be exploring the topic of:
The Out Breath: Unlocking Concentration
Shodo Harada Roshi is known as a “teacher of teachers”, with masters from various lineages coming to sit with him in Japan. If you went to Harada’s monastery, the main meditation technique you’d learn involves slowing the out breath to last one minute. This drastically slows down your physiology, which in turn settles the mind.
The class is 1.5 hours long and begins at:
11am PT (L.A.) / 2pm ET (N.Y.) / 7pm GMT (London) / 8pm CET (Paris)

You're cordially invited to @brightmind_app's 'Height of Summer' Retreat! Choose 4 or 7 Days | August 18-24 | 2 Hours From NYC
Brightmind in-person retreats focus on Six Elements of Wellness:
1. Meditation: Deepen your concentration, clarity, and balance more than you ever thought possible.
2. Community: Nurture lifelong friendships based on shared values, shared growth, and a shared background in Brightmind’s approach to meditation.
3. Nature: Listen to the birds, rest your gaze on the far-off mountains, feel the warm breeze against your cheek. There are miles of nature trails and the neighboring property is a 7,000-acre pristine forest preserve.
4. Food: Enjoy three homemade, nutritious, and delicious meals each day. Vegetarian and meat options at every meal.
5. Sleep: There will be no sleep deprivation here! The schedule allows for more than 8 hours of sleep each night. Organic linens and no traffic noise.
6. Movement: Everyday, there’s a 1-hour movement period where you can go on a hike, do yoga, workout, etc. And there are plenty of other opportunities (e.g. afternoon break and walking meditation periods) to move more.
