A former bishop in our ward gave a wonderful talk in Sacrament meeting this morning. I love it when he speaks. I felt like sharing it.

This is a “short” overview of the talk (remember my version“short” is probably different from your version of short 😊):

“As the Savior entered Jerusalem, the people rejoiced. They welcomed Him as a king, hopeful, expectant, celebrating.
They believed He would deliver them from their immediate struggles. They were ready for a Savior who would change their circumstances but they did not yet understand His true mission.

Within days, many who cried “Hosanna” would turn away. Not because Christ changed, but because their understanding of Him was incomplete. This matters for us. What we believe about Jesus Christ shapes how we follow Him. If we misunderstand His character, we will struggle to trust His path. The Savior does not promise a life free from difficulty. He promises that all things can be consecrated for our good.

“He doeth not anything save it be for the benefit of the world.” (2 Nephi 26:24)

Even our hardest experiences are not wasted. “All these things shall give thee experience, and shall be for thy good.” (D&C 122:7) That is a doctrine of deep trust. But trusting God can feel difficult when we don’t understand why. We don’t see the whole picture. We don’t hold the “book” He holds the end from the beginning.

In John 6, many disciples walked away when Christ taught things that were hard. Then Jesus asked the Twelve:
“Will ye also go away?”

Peter’s answer is the heart of discipleship: “Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.” That is faith. Not having every answer, but knowing Him well enough to stay.

Marvin J. Ashton once shared a story of a blind girl and her father:

A little blind girl was sitting on the lap of her father in a crowded compartment of a train. A friend seated nearby, said to the father, “Let me give you a little rest”. He reached over and took the little girl on his lap. Now, remember, the little girl is blind. A few moments later, the father said to her, “Do you know who is holding you?”, “No, she replied, but you do.”

Elder Ashton further said our trust and our relationship with our Heavenly Father should be one similar to that of the blind little girl and her earthly father: When sorrow, tragedy, and heartbreaks occur in our lives, wouldn't it be wonderful if when the whisperings of God say, “do you know why this has happened to you?” We can have the peace of mind to answer, “No, but You do.”

One simple image shared today stayed with me: A blind child sitting in her father’s arms. “Do you know who is holding you?”

“No… but you do.”

That is the kind of trust the Savior invites. Even when we cannot see we can choose to believe in who He is.
Sometimes what feels like a “stone” in our lives is, in time, revealed to be bread. God is never careless with our pain.

This Palm Sunday, remember:
He is not only the Savior who triumphantly entered Jerusalem,
He is the Savior who walked willingly toward Gethsemane and the Cross.
And because of Him, nothing in our lives is without purpose.

He lives.
He knows us.
And we can trust Him.
