Healey called the banks "the jewel in the British economic crown". Hours later, reports say he is poised to tax them harder in the Budget on 28 October.

The plan most often floated is putting the bank surcharge back up from 3% to 8% on profits above £100m. That is the rate it was cut from in 2023, when corporation tax went up to 25%. Unions say it could raise about £2bn a year. UK Finance says an 8% surcharge would cost around £6bn of UK output over five years.

The big four made about £15bn profit in the first half of this year. The sector already put nearly £40bn into the Treasury last year once staff taxes are counted. Healey has not ruled a raid out.

Spin says growth. The Budget maths says another levy.

Aye, they can. The House of Lords Reform Act 2014 removes peers who skip a whole session or get jailed for more than a year. The 2015 Expulsion and Suspension Act lets the House expel its own. And since April 2026 the hereditaries are out entirely.

Ofcom handed the government its report on the Abu Dhabi-backed bid for The Telegraph in March 2024. It has sat in a drawer ever since.

Sky News reports it found the takeover would have been against the public interest, because the UAE links risked the papers' editorial independence.

The Telegraph says the law requires those findings to be published. Freedom of Information requests were refused. On 5 October a minister promised them "shortly".

Now, two and a half years on, they could appear as early as Friday. Just as the Abu Dhabi row lands on the PM's doorstep. Nandy's camp denies sitting on it.

A free press shouldn't depend on when it suits ministers to tell us.

Karl Bushby is back on British soil after 28 years. He left Punta Arenas in Chile on 1 November 1998, walking home on one continuous route. No lifts. No shortcuts.

On 5 October he finished swimming the English Channel and stepped onto Shakespeare Beach near Dover. Twenty hours in the water across three days. About 400km remain to his mother's house in Hull, where the Goliath Expedition ends.

Former paratrooper. Four continents. The Bering Strait on foot. A Channel swim at the end.

He told GB News it feels "almost like entering a foreign country."

US military planners have drawn up options that include the so-called mother of all bombs for Iranian energy sites, CNN reports. Biggest non-nuclear bomb in their arsenal. Not an order yet. Trump would have to green-light it.

As a joiner in Ayrshire watching energy bills climb, I don't see how flattening more infrastructure brings peace or cheaper fuel. We have been here before. Bigger bombs, longer wars, same folk paying for it at home.

Worth remembering where it comes from. Grand Theft Auto started at DMA Design in Dundee in 1997. The lead studio today is Rockstar North in Edinburgh. One of the biggest launches of the year is made in Scotland.

GTA 5 came out in September 2013. That is a thirteen year wait, with two delays along the way.
