A5: Guided practice will help S transfer. We want to practice these skills so much that it becomes automatic. We are retraining how our brains look at NF! #HCPSread
@PemberleyST They need to protect their ability to think freely, neutrally, and malleably when better information arises. Notice and Note can help them do that! #hcpsread
A4: This screams social media to me! People will believe anything if it is online. People (not just kids) need to understand how to grapple with the intruder and understand how experience, bias, and motive impact the information given. #HCPSread
@abeeliz1 We were able to tie this idea to our fiction text today. We analyzed how the author manipulated our emotions to side with the main character (Darnell) through the use of bias and 3rd person limited POV. Itโs laying the groundwork for extremely deep thinking! #hcpsread
A3: NF is so much more complex than I realized! Having categories (SPs) gives us a concrete toolbox to uncover confusion and WHY the author does the things they do. And the strategies give quick simple fixes to clarify thinking. Itโs all part a clear directive! #HCPSRead
@Kjonesie12 Bringing an abstract concept to the concrete will help them see what we mean when we tell them to see the reading in their mind and visualize. #hcpsread
A2: While I know B&P say there is a lot of complaint, Sketch to Stretch would work well in my room. Out of my 45, I have 15 ESE and 8 ELL (most are high needs). This helps them feel some success. It clarifies thinking without having to just analyze the words. #HCPSRead
A1: Discussion and elaboration allow Ss to process and learn from each otherโs thinking. I find myself doing that in this training. After reading comments I totally revamp my thinking. We donโt have all the answers.#HCPSRead
Follow Up: I mapped out my sequence for teaching the SPs bc we are back to NF! Despite calendar stress, I know I have to make the time to explicitly teach it & it will pay off. Found great NB anchor charts and mini readings for each SP. I will also connect to Tropicana. #HCPSRead
A5: The strategies need to be purposefully planned and scaffolded. Knowing exactly what you want your Ss to be able to do with the NF text will point you in the right direction for which strategy to use. Eventually the goal is for the Ss to pick the strategy themselves #HCPSRead
@KellyJo18425130 Seeing grammar in action will help students see how and why it works. It also shows how grammar is not only contained to a sentence. There needs to be agreement in the larger text. #HCPSRead
A4: It can help Ss clarify word order, context clues, synonyms, etc... This helps with comprehension because these specific skills are needed to understand what a text is saying when things are not initially clear. This could be especially helpful for our ELL kiddos! #HCPSRead
A3: This strategy allows Ss show their learning visually. It also helps students who lack organizational skills show their learning in an organized format. #HCPSRead
@SarahESchafer I feel like I do a better job with planning discussion for comprehension questions than I do for metacognition. You canโt have deeper comprehension without metacognition. This has been a major eye opener! #hcpsread
@RhondaArduini Modeling our thinking is so important. Some kids donโt even know where to begin with the critical thinking process. This gives them guidance for future thinking #hcpsread
A2: The best way to help facilitate S thinking is through the strategies is by listening to S talk after explicitly teaching the strategy. By listening to S talk we can help them navigate any misunderstandings #HCPSRead
