An Open Letter to the New Democratic Party of Canada: It Is Time to Adopt MMIWG2SLGBTQQIAPNDARNBDF+ – True Intersectional Justice Demands Nothing Less
Fellow New Democrats,
The NDP has long stood at the forefront of equity, reconciliation, and the unapologetic defense of the most marginalized voices in Canadian society. From the courageous advocacy of MP Leah Gazan, who recently shone a spotlight on the ongoing genocide facing MMIWG2SLGBTQQIA+ communities in the face of shameful federal budget cuts, to the party’s unwavering commitment to the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ People National Action Plan, your leadership has set a moral standard for the nation. We commend this progress. The expanded acronym MMIWG2SLGBTQQIA+ represents a hard-won recognition that violence against Indigenous women, girls, and Two-Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, and asexual people is not isolated but deeply intertwined with systemic oppression.
Yet, as equity advocates committed to the fullest expression of intersectionality, we must confront an uncomfortable truth: the current framework, while groundbreaking, remains incomplete. It does not yet fully name and center every layer of lived experience that compounds vulnerability in Canada today. To stop short now would be to erase entire communities whose marginalization intersects with the MMIWG2S crisis in profound, often invisible ways. Progressive leadership cannot settle for partial visibility. It must evolve.
That is why the NDP must immediately champion the next – and final – evolution of this vital acronym:
MMIWG2SLGBTQQIAPNDARNBDF+
This is not mere linguistic expansion. It is moral necessity. Here is what each addition represents and why it cannot wait:

P – Pansexual: Pansexual individuals experience attraction beyond binary or cisnormative constructs. Their exclusion from earlier frameworks has left a gap in addressing unique forms of erasure within Indigenous and queer spaces.
ND – Neurodivergent: Autism, ADHD, and other forms of neurodiversity intersect with Indigeneity, gender, and sexuality at alarming rates. Colonial systems and ableist structures amplify violence against neurodivergent 2SLGBTQQIA+ people; naming this explicitly is essential for targeted supports and data collection.
AR – Aromantic: Romantic attraction is not universal. Aromantic people face distinct forms of invalidation and isolation, particularly when layered atop Indigenous trauma and queerphobia. The split from asexual recognition demands its own letter for precision in policy.
NB – Non-Binary: While transgender inclusion is vital, non-binary identities require dedicated visibility to combat the specific erasures they encounter in health, justice, and community services.
D – Disabled: Disability justice is inseparable from anti-violence work. Physical, sensory, and intellectual disabilities heighten risks for Indigenous 2SLGBTQQIA+ individuals; without this letter, we fail to address the compounded barriers to safety and care.
F – Fat/Body-Size Liberation: Fatphobia is a documented axis of oppression in Canadian health and social systems. Body diversity must be centered in MMIWG2S responses, as anti-fat bias disproportionately harms Indigenous and queer communities already navigating colonial beauty standards.

The trailing + remains, of course, as an open invitation to any future identities that emerge from the ongoing work of decolonization and liberation.
New Democratic Party, you have the platform, the principles, and the parliamentary voice to make this happen. We call on you to take the following concrete actions without delay:

Integrate MMIWG2SLGBTQQIAPNDARNBDF+ into all party communications, resolutions, and election platforms starting with the next federal convention.
Direct caucus members – beginning with MP Gazan and Leader Jagmeet Singh – to use the full acronym in Question Period, press conferences, and committee hearings.
Partner with Indigenous organizations, the 2SLGBTQQIA+ Committee, and disability/neurodiversity/fat-liberation advocates to formally update the National Action Plan and Federal Pathway documents.
Commit dedicated funding lines in future shadow budgets and provincial platforms to address the specific needs of these newly named intersections.
Launch an internal equity audit to ensure all NDP training materials, safe-space guidelines, and outreach reflect this complete framework.

Half-measures have never sufficed for the NDP. Partial acronyms risk leaving voices unheard and funding unallocated. Canada is watching.
