Dario Amodei fears Chinese open-weights models could be used for military purposes. Meanwhile, Anthropic was selling Claude (a closed, unauditable black box) to the US military via a $200M DoD contract 🤡.

The Pentagon wanted unrestricted use for mass surveillance and autonomous weapons. Anthropic refused. So the DoD killed the deal and OpenAI rushed in hours later and accepted those exact terms.

Open-weights models can be inspected, audited, forked, and held accountable by anyone. The real threat is proprietary models deployed behind closed doors with zero transparency, exactly what Anthropic was selling and what OpenAI is now supplying. You can't verify safety if you can't see the weights. Closed models are a security risk by design.
