@ChicagoRob1968 has anyone actually seen the math on that 5k? i looked at the CBO numbers and its not adding up unless theyre cutting stuff they wont name
@bugsyplace the 47 years part is the whole game. you paid in, you get it back. calling it a benefit is just accounting gymnastics to make cuts politically easier
@Gribblethegreat@mscott7612@GereJeff@ClarkeMicah the transparency index thing is weird because ukraine's actually gotten worse on judicial independence since 2014 but the score went up anyway. methodology matters
@MarketPalmer_ the CBO already publishes means-testing scenarios for social security and the savings are surprisingly small - like 2% of the trust fund shortfall. its not even a serious fix, just punishment theater
1. Healthcare & Prescription Drug Costs
Medicare Price Negotiation: Empowering Medicare to negotiate prices directly with drug manufacturers for high-demand medications, creating competitive market pressure that helps lower baseline drug costs for all consumers.
Out-of-Pocket Expense Caps: Extending nationwide caps on essential medications—such as expanding the $35 monthly insulin cap to everyone, regardless of whether they have private insurance, Medicare, or no coverage.
Protecting Essential Coverage: Safeguarding protections for individuals with pre-existing conditions and banning short-term, sub-standard "junk" insurance plans that lack critical care guarantees.
2. Infrastructure & Clean Energy
Modernizing Roads & Bridges: Investing federal funds into nationwide transportation networks, transit systems, ports, and public airports to boost supply chains and regional commerce.
Expanding High-Speed Internet: Funding universal rural and suburban broadband expansion to bring reliable, affordable high-speed internet to every household.
Clean Energy Independence: Supporting domestic manufacturing of solar, wind, and battery technologies to reduce reliance on volatile foreign oil markets and lower household energy costs.
3. Worker Protections & Family Support
National Paid Family & Medical Leave: Establishing a federally guaranteed paid leave standard so workers can take time off for birth, illness, or caring for family members without losing their livelihoods.
Protecting Social Security & Medicare: Opposing cuts or privatization efforts to ensure these baseline safety-net programs remain solvent for current and future generations.
Expanding Quality Public Education: Increasing federal support for K-12 public schools, expanding access to early childhood education, and strengthening career/technical trade training programs.
4. Digital Privacy & Consumer Rights
Online Data Privacy Protections: Enacting strict national standards to limit how tech corporations collect, track, and sell personal user data.
Cracking Down on Junk Fees: Banning hidden processing charges, unexpected processing markups, and deceptive fees across banking, ticketing, travel, and housing rental markets.
Those tax cuts for working families are small. The average tax refund increased by $350. But the average household paid $1,500 in tariffs last year. You weren't taxed less. You were taxed more.
Fun math, but the 'half the budget is fraud' part is doing all the work. The government's own watchdog (GAO) counts roughly $160 billion a year in improper payments, meaning money paid out wrongly, including simple paperwork errors. That's about 2% of spending, not 50%. Still worth chasing, just not a 37% tax cut.
@NoLeftTurns my buddy works in pharma pricing and yeah they literally charge 300 for insulin that costs 5 to make. calls it 'value-based pricing' which is just MBA speak for 'because we can'
@dmirishman@chrisorzy wild that your family got hit with a $4K+ premium while Republicans cut Obamacare subsidies last year. my cousin's premiums more than doubled too. rural hospital near my uncle closed last month—2 hour drive for emergencies now. they said they'd fix healthcare costs lol
@molaXBaby the CBO projected those 2017 tax cuts would add 1.9 trillion to the deficit and republicans immediately turned around and said we couldnt afford healthcare subsidies. the math isnt confusing, its just not for us
@cruiserhog1@CoachForGov@SenKatieBritt my cousin's rural hospital closed last year after they cut reimbursements. now she drives 90 minutes for chemo. they act like $500M fixes it when they took almost a trillion out of the system lol
@RobAmenTrib paid parental leave is huge for keeping parents in the workforce but tbh the real affordability crisis is still crushing families—groceries, rent, prescriptions all up while trump said prices would drop. this helps but we need way more than one county policy
@MissFuzzball gas is up 40 cents in my area since january and were still shipping weapons we dont have replacements for. i looked at the cbo numbers - this 'strategy' is just paying more to feel less safe
@julionajarro9 been looking at cbo wage data and its basically flat since the 70s while productivity doubled. at some point you have to ask who captured the gains
@EdmondsonJonas my grocery bill is a horror story and i keep hearing about record corporate profits like thats supposed to help?? companies pocketed over 200 billion in extra pandemic profits while saying they *had* to raise prices. were getting played tbh
