I remember asking assistant coach Mo Cheeks, what’s harder to do? Workout after practice or before?? I only asked cuz by time I would get to the gym, Russ was already done in the morning and I usually got mine in after practice. Mo like, “coming in before practice is probably harder”…since then, it’s been my routine….a lot of people looked at the emotions on the court and thought Russ was loud, nah to me, he was quiet and methodical. He lead by example and once the lights were bright, he let everything out and experienced pure freedom. It was inspiring as his teammate and everywhere I went, I seen it inspire people from all walks of life, crazy thing is, he didn’t say much, he just showed up. For 18 years. This basketball life is sacred to us as professionals, what we put into that court means everything. Some of us wish we could go back and do things with a little more intent and some can just wipe their hands and be satisfied with the time spent. Who u gonna be? We know what zero was on…keep inspiring in the next phase of life champ. I don’t care what happens, can’t erase what it was…The first YNs, finals run in our early 20s, all star games, seeing each other get injured and bounce back, the bus rides, plane rides, card games, jokes and arguments, the whole thing, memorable!! …to the whole Westbrook family, Nina, the kids, mama Westbrook, big Russ, Ray, Donnell, everybody from luezinger high and ucla and many more that I’m forgettin, much love and Congratulations on a iconic career.

YOU HAD A BAD GAME … GOOD
As parents, we want the best for our kids. We want them to crush it on the court. When they don’t, it’s easy to get mad, make excuses, blame other people.
Bad games are a blessing, bc of what we can learn from them. Players should be pissed at bad games… the more we embrace it and support them, the more they’ll use the adversity to grow and become stronger
Central Arkansas Guard Layne Taylor has been one of the top freshmen in the country. So far this season he’s averaging
18 PPG
4 RPG
4 APG
2 SPG
35% 3FG (10 attempts a game)
Taylor’s mix of shooting and playmaking for his age has been extremely impressive, he’s currently the only underclasmen to make at least 40 threes this season and have an AST% of 25. Taylor is a very creative player who has the ability to make shots from anywhere while also making impressive assists.
Do you really think playing 4, 5, 6 sometimes 8-bball games in a weekend at an AAU event is healthy at any level??
1-2 well played games w/ great intensity, concentration, effort is all that's needed. Enjoy rest of weekend as a kid w/ friends and family.

Coaching isn't a job.
It is a calling.
One that few will ever understand.
Here are 10 Truths of Being a COACH.
1: Spousal Support is Crucial - Coaching can strain family life. A supportive spouse is a must. There is no other way.
2: It's a 24/7 Commitment - Coaching is more than a job; it's a way of life. You'll spend tons of time planning, analyzing, and strategizing. It will consume your mind and thinking. But when your team succeeds, it's all worth it!
3: Critics Will Come - It is unfortunate, but it is what it is. No matter how well you do, there will always be critics. Accept it; you know your team best.
4: There will be Highs and Lows - It is guaranteed. But the highs will be some of the best memories in your life. And the lows will be great learning opportunities for everyone. It prepares everyone for life.
5: Don’t do it for $$$ - High School Coaching doesn't pay much, but it's not about that. It's a calling, a lifestyle driven by love for the game and helping young athletes grow and develop to be their best. It is about building a TEAM.
6. Success Takes Time - Building a great team requires patience. There will be ups and downs, but stick with it, and you'll see results. Building a positive team culture is the #1 job of a coach. Do not forget this.
7: You Will be Humbled - I promise. Coaching is a very humbling profession. You will have very tough losses, and you will wonder how it happened. Never assume anything. Working with 16-17-year-old kids promises many surprises!
8: You Won't Please Everyone - Tough decisions come with the job. Not everyone will agree. Remember, you're working for the team's benefit, not just one person. Make yourself happy. Don't try to please others.
9. Players Need to Want It - As a coach, you can inspire and motivate, but players must want success. Encourage hard work, commitment, and goal-setting; let them own their success.
10. It is Always Worth It - Despite the challenges, coaching is incredibly rewarding. Seeing your players become strong, confident individuals is priceless. Watching your team win when the odds are stacked against you is inspiring. Winning a Championship is incredible!
Choose to Coach.

We are losing good coaches every day. The toll of unreasonable parents, lack of admin support, schools & leagues adding more (useless) trainings, unimaginable hours, & lack of being appreciated generally wins out. Hang in there, coaches, you make a difference in people’s lives!
