The approach in Sold a Story Season 2 was never untested. Project Follow Through, the largest US education experiment, backed it. A 2018 meta-analysis of 50 years of Direct Instruction research (Stockard et al.) found positive effects across subjects. @ehanford#SoldAStory
Sold a Story Season 2 is out, and this time it's about teaching itself. Episode 1 opens in 1966 with preschoolers working algebra problems, taught by Zig Engelmann. His premise still holds: when a child doesn't learn, look at the lesson first. @ehanford#SoldAStory
In special education, explicit instruction is a High-Leverage Practice, not a philosophy. Model, practice together, check, reteach. Sold a Story Season 2 asks a fair question: why is that the exception in general education instead of the baseline? @ehanford#SoldAStory
You can listen to the first two episodes of Sold a Story Season 2 today.

What is Direct Instruction?
School logic:
Give every student a laptop, then ask the teacher to spend the lesson making sure thirty laptops aren’t being used for anything except the worksheet we could have just printed instead.
My blog from a few weeks ago is hitting a nerve with teachers. The research is clear: good collaboration means talking about real classroom problems, looking at actual student work, and making space for disagreement. That's called Pedagogically Productive Talk—and it's almost never what happens in our meetings.
Instead, we get compliance theater. One person facilitates, one takes notes, everyone else sits quietly. We fill out templates and work through abstract agendas. We almost never talk about what's actually happening in our classrooms. The paperwork requirements haven't just gotten in the way of real conversations—they've completely replaced them. Teachers see it. The comments are blunt: "100% compliance masquerading as professionalism, 0% creativity."

💡A survey of Australian teachers found 88% believe in the learning styles myth, 38% believe students learn better through discovery than explicit instruction, 41% believe testing tends to detract from learning.
If you're taught neuromyths about learning from someone who is supposed to be an expert, you'll likely believe them.
The report rightly recommends strengthening initial teacher education, among other things.

In the past five years, I’ve seen a sharp rise in students struggling with foundational school skills:
-Legible handwriting
-Bringing basic supplies
-Following verbal directions
-Spelling & punctuation
-Reading & writing stamina
Ignoring these deficits in the name of "rigor" only exacerbates existing learning gaps.
In other words, the ocean is wet. Once again, I’m not dismissing that teacher student relationships are good, but they are far from necessary for student learning.
This term as a teacher practice didn’t even exist a few decades ago. Our students were expected to learn no matter who the teacher was or their personality. And I’m not excusing teacher abuse.
BUT enough of this focus on teachers needing to personally “connect” with students for effective instruction and learning. It doesn’t work. Let’s focus on teachers delivering high quality instruction. If a relationship forms great, but it should not be the goal. The goal is learning.

@utrgv Dr. Albert Irlas of the Educational Leadership program is a genuinely good person. He was so supportive and accommodating when my wife experienced a sudden loss in her family at the end of the semester. He has also been so supportive post graduation for any questions she has!
@FrameworkPuter A modular (expandable) network attached storage device. Enterprise equipment is no longer economical for home lab use due to energy costs.
Happening now: Teachers, support staff, and students from @HoustonISD are rallying with @TexasAFT educators in Austin calling for more funding to public education.
Earlier they spoke with lawmakers about their concerns over a possible @teainfo takeover. @HFT2415 @KHOU
@tgrierhisd My “School of Education” for student/clinical teaching was a ghost town, young people aren’t going into education. Go after alternative certification, and let the state fund a paid stipend for student teachers. Working an entire year unpaid was horrific.
