In 2018, Ken Ehrman's niece's dog Ruby escaped her invisible fence and was fatally struck by a car. His niece was 11. Ken learned that about 10 million pets go missing every year and immediately saw the gap: invisible fences are a single line of defense, and GPS has no line to cross.
Ken had spent over two decades in the Internet of Things industry, founding I.D. Systems in 1993 — wireless vehicle tracking that went public on NASDAQ in 1999. He and his brother Michael, also a Stanford graduate, co-founded Halo Collar that same year. They outsourced hardware design and manufacturing to Quanta in Taiwan and app development to a team in Eastern Europe, visiting Taiwan several times a year and holding virtual meetings three to four times weekly.
By late 2021, fundraising dried up and investors demanded profitability — forcing a full strategic pivot. One key unlock: having the manufacturer hold and ship inventory directly to customers, so Halo collected payment before it owed anything. The company had invested close to $100 million in R&D and reached a $400 million valuation before making the shift. It worked. Halo Collar has since quadrupled sales, generated nearly $100 million in revenue in 2025 and is projected to hit $140 million this year — protecting over 500,000 dogs to date.
His advice: validate every assumption at every step. Most startups that fail don't see it coming. The ones that succeed keep checking that the math still makes sense.
