Lenacapavir is one of the most exciting innovations in the history of #HIV.
My congratulations to #SouthAfrica for being among the first countries to launch the national lenacapavir programme.
Looking ahead, South Africa has the opportunity not only to scale up access, but to contribute to regional production and supply, strengthening health security across the continent.
this is honestly an excellent celebratory and motivational speech from Mamdani at the Knicks parade. i'm ready to run through a wall, and i'm not even a Knicks fan
“It’s time to wake the fuck up”
Neil deGrasse Tyson: “Half of my fellow graduate students when I was getting my PhD were foreign nationals. Do you realize one third of all the Nobel Prizes in sciences won by Americans were won by immigrants to America? If you’re gonna trail the world in practically everything, including your economy, it’s time to wake the fuck up”
Encouraging to see that individuals who develop #Ebola may have access to #MBP134. But an important question remains: will people affected by Ebola in Africa have the same access?
MBP134 is a cocktail of two human monoclonal antibodies originally isolated from the blood of an Ebola survivor from the 2013–2016 West Africa.
The communities that have borne the greatest burden of Ebola outbreaks have also contributed to the scientific advances that made therapies like MBP134 possible. Equity in access must be part of the conversation.
Every day, we're trapped in the paradox of the "Schrödinger’s immigrant", a mythical outsider who exists simultaneously as a lazy welfare dependent & an unstoppable machine taking all the jobs(both skilled & unskilled).
The immigrant remains a highly convenient shape shifting scapegoat designed to explain away ALL complex, systemic domestic failures.
Keeping this paradox alive ensures politicians never have to answer for a decade of chronic underinvestment, flatlining productivity, & broken infrastructure.
THE WORST THING YOU CAN DO IS LET THIS WORLD STEAL YOUR WHIMSY. PROTECT YOUR WHIMSY AT ALL COST. DON’T LET THESE JOYLESS MOTHERFUCKERS STEAL YOUR MAGIC.
“In practice, however, technology is never neutral, because it takes on the characteristics of those who devise it, finance it, regulate it and use it.”
THANK YOU POPE LEO FOR SAYING THIS.
Time for the “technology is a tool with no inherent moral position” idea to die!
LITERALLY YES???????? How are you out here not reading papers you *cited*?????? You have a PhD?????? What do you mean you didn’t read the paper????? This is a W I L D thing to say out loud.
No one believes me when I say this, but the decline in reading is already having dire consequences for art & culture. The media you loved in your youth—shows, albums, films—was made by artists who were widely read. You will not have that quality of art in a post-literate world.
“It’s ableist to expect writers to write.” “Academics can’t read papers.” “How can a student possibly write a short essay?” You guys are slowly talking yourselves out of doing ANYTHING. It’s shameful how we now avoid any sort of intellectual effort. This is how brains die.
I barely survived “telling writers they have to read is gatekeeping,” I don’t think I can live through “telling writers they have to write is gatekeeping”
guess what? you can be a deeply serious person with a silly little heart. you can care about the world, grieve what’s broken, and still be delighted by clouds, snacks, and fuzzy socks.
WHO declares health emergency due to Ebola outbreak in Congo w 80+ deaths. Undetected for weeks. USAID and CDC once worked there to strengthen surveillance. As I wrote in 2023, that cut detection to <48 hrs & costs. That’s now gone. This is the result.
