Iran was on the verge of economic collapse with runway inflation. Their accounts were frozen, they were heavily sanctioned, and they had to sell their oil at steep discounts. They also had no claim over the Strait of Hormuz

Today, their military has been degraded and its military industrial complex mostly destroyed, but the country stands to receive large sums of money and a reopening of their economy. Granted, sanctions can be reapplied, but they can also close the Strait again. Everything they lost can be rebuilt and they’ve secured a future for their proxies

But most importantly I think precedents matter. And what makes Iran stronger and more emboldened is that their asymmetric tactics (I call it global terrorism) have been legitimized because the west blinked and allowed them to get away with it. This rewriting of international norms will be by far the worst aspect for the west. Instead of reimposing deterrence, we’ve lost what we had before the war began

And I don’t only put this on Trump because this was the moment for the whole world to stand up to Iran. But for a number of stupid reasons, they did not

Well, I think we can all agree now that Israel does not control the US or Donald Trump.
