Dear Youth Hockey,

Today is the day. It's an important day. A day in youth hockey that everyone's been waiting for.

Today, @MYHockeyRanking has released it's first rankings!

I've already gotten a message from a hockey director about an angry parent about their team's ranking. And I'm sure it won't be the last.

I've already seen the posts from programs highlighting their teams rankings on social media. Who cares. It's all marketing BS.

Coaches should be judged based on the type of practice that they run, not the ranking of their team. Development should be the watermark, not recruiting.

I was a college coach and I never looked at the ranking of a team when I was recruiting players. It didn't matter. And it never will.

To be honest, if I talked to a parent or a coach and they gloated over it...it would be a red flag.

So let's relax. Let's let the kids have fun playing the game they love. Let's challenge them in practice to be better. Let's develop the life skills in these kids that matter. And let's quit it with what I believe is the thing that is causing so much angst and uncertainty in our kids today- comparison.

The kids deserve better from us adults. Let's be better.
