1/ #UEACEEC21#Sesh5 Good afternoon🙂 We know the only constant in ecology is change. Populations change b/w years & over decades due to variation in survival & productivity. Data gathered by many wonderful @_BTO volunteers allow us to unpick some of this https://t.co/xJ2U3eSRfG
@Joy_Love_55 @ChrisGPackham@_BTO At last count around 2,800 #fabulous#birdwatching people contribute counts each year across the UK - meaning we can make a pretty good stab at how well (or not) our bird populations are doing 👉 https://t.co/IgLUL02n2I and I thank them all for their efforts 🙏👏 #ornithology
But what does this loss look like? My attempt to visualise it: each bird represents 1 million pairs - many more (57) fade out than are replaced (21). Thanks to all @_BTO#volunteers whose observations provide evidence for action👉https://t.co/zza1JqQXlw #ornithology#conservation
Biodiversity loss is rarely the sudden extinction of a species. Biodiversity loss is the thinning of the tapestry of life. While the holes appearing in this tapestry are overtly identifiable and dramatic, they are symptoms of the serious system-wide issue.
@Lophophanes@stevedudley_@_BTO Yep - Woodpigeon is estimated as the second most increased species, after Wren presumably due to warmer winters. We've effectively replaced 2.8M Skylarks, Grey Partridge and Lapwings on farmland with Woodpigeons 🙄
I think this might be a first - @_bto staff left in the bar by Scottish #birdringing folks, even if @rock_nester is on the edge. What an inspirational day hearing about the "known unknowns”.
The value of "in person" mtgs for stimulating thought cant be underestimated #ornithology
@LeeDaly19@_BTO@MyaBambrick1@IBIS_journal@Rothamsted@RSPBScience Great stuff 🙂 although swifts & swallows are actually unrelated. Swifts seem to have diverged from hummingbirds 45-50 million years ago, while swallows diverged from warblers much more recently. A great example of convergent evolution in body shape adapting to the same lifestyle
@saswisch Depending on which eye I use, either something ceatacean-onny or migrating flutterbys. I think I may need to have a word with my optical synapses, but either way it's looking like it will be stunning... 🙂
In the last year the 7(!) biggest oil companies made $150bn profit (not turnover) which ranks them 55 of 190 countries https://t.co/L9A0yFboBI We should take a moment to reflect whether this is really acceptable?

@AnushkaAsthana I'm sorry? What? banging on the desks? Who are these people? Toddlers? In what other job would that be an acceptable way to show support? I thought MPs were supposed to be dignified leaders of society...
What a great idea & so much better than some weve seen recently. Building a different future, even if it is only one tree, is a much more constructive & engaging way to show how society can change for the better. Well played @xryouthuk Surely @MayorofLondon can nourish such hope?
A powerful symbol of hope. Yesterday, members of @xryouthuk planted an Oak sapling in Parliament Square, in the desolate grounds where all the grass died in this summer's heatwaves.
We're asking @MayorofLondon to #KeepTheTree. The seeds of change need fostering more than ever.
@UltramarineUK @spurnbirdobs A couple of folks have looked but not found it - it now seems to be buried in the mud, so I think we have to give up on it sadly...
🚨📢 Do I know any #ornithology or #BirdRinging tweeps near #grimsby#cleethorpes@spurnbirdobs who might be up for retrieving an oystercatcher satellite tag that has fallen off after two years? (Almost) Eternal gratitude and a beer or two for anyone up for the challenge 🙏
