As lots of people are liking a post I wrote that has the word "advice" in it, I need to issue my periodic reminder that my advice may in fact be terrible. I know very little, in general.
But if you *really* just believe that CPD should stop actively policing communities where lots of shootings happen, you'd cancel ShotSpotter and sit on your hands. Notably, that's what the Mayor seems to be doing. (5/6)
@AJHolmgren You sound like an ad agency guy explaining how the negative ROI that was just estimated is ACKSHUALLY a huge positive ROI.
"Well the brand would have gone into a tailspin without the ads you saw because of some thing you can't see from your angle"
When The Executor gets damaged beyond repair *in space* in Return of the Jedi, it then "falls" from the air as though it was within gravitational range of a very large planet.
It should have just sat there in space burning.
Trump isn't a good guy and we can do better.
Platner isn't a good guy and we can do better.
The whatabouts coming from both directions are getting so tedious.
Every politician who has no idea how to pay for their grandiose politics claims that they will find the money by making government more efficient and unlocking tons of outside funds. The problem is that the existing politicians would also like to have free money to spend, and if it were available, they already would have spent it.
The HomeGrown Purchase Assistance Grant comes at a time when homeownership is becoming increasingly out of reach for many Chicagoans, as housing prices rise. https://t.co/nrkEyv4o0S
@JeremyWGR The Bills are just not run that way. They are run to minimize the chance they miss the playoffs for the next 8 years, not to maximize the chance they win the super bowl in the next 3.

Authors can't be trusted to run their own robustness checks.
In 17 AER papers, only 12/211 robustness checks "fail" with p > 0.05 (white).
In robustness checks chosen by 3rd parties, almost *half* of them fail (blue).

This is one thing I think economists have much better intuition for than non-economists—global capitalists are losing money due to war and conflict, not making money. They want peace and trade. Parable of the broken window, etc. Any gains from defense being higher markup are dwarfed by the losses in economic output.

Over at @acitythatworks: In 2024, CPS celebrated research that indicated the District's reading scores had rebounded quickly from the pandemic. Now we have better data - and the results are ugly. In reality, scores dropped more than almost any of our big city peers. (1/5)
This applies beyond founders. From my experience, AI is a superpower in the sense that it enhances, sometimes by a qualitative shift, skills and expertise people already have. The confused, just produce more confused stuff.
A lot of Americans are withholding way too much in taxes from their paycheck (this probably isn't there fault, as they usually don't have much say in the matter)
