And what ppl call “Dengism” didn’t emerge in an intellectual vacuum. Chinese reformers drew heavily on Caribbean economists like 🇱🇨 Arthur Lewis who wrestled w/how underdeveloped countries build productive capacity, industrialize, and raise living standards w/o remaining dependent appendages of rich countries…How markets interact w/the state as the commanding height of the economy.

The left sleeps on the Caribbean as a site of intellectual production..but yea, I think the Cuba discourse is insufferable to me bc China’s reforms responded to Chinese developmental challenges.

Cuba’s reforms will respond to Cuban ones and those reforms can’t be separated from imperialist pressure. But how a socialist state adapts to those pressures while preserving sovereignty & its wider developmental goals still matter. I will defend Cuba 🤷🏾‍♀️
