@DBryanRhodes@glorify_central Yeah that sounds exhausting and they sound like pretty dumb people. Or at least people who are ok pretending to be dumb online to little end. (Meant to originally post this here but to show how not online I am I couldn't successfully use this site)
@DBryanRhodes The way I was taught the 3rd Ecumenical Council the concerns were more over the nature of Jesus than what it might say about Mary. But I do believe part of Nestorious' concern was how can the finite birth the infinite and some implications regarding Mary.
@DBryanRhodes Which I imagine was an even greater concern when people believed gods had mothers. And yet, in that time, the Church adopted this language, seemingly believing the juice was worth the squeeze. I tend to agree with them.
@DBryanRhodes So the degree to which theotokos means we need to make Mary so special that she's no longer human, it's problematic. But properly understood, theotokos is essential for christology, a true understanding of the Christ event, & says something profound about the God who became human
@glorify_central@DBryanRhodes I was unaware of a modern theotokos controversy. I figured it was solved in the fifth century? Honestly I don't look for RC/Protestant divides in the theology of the seven ecumenical councils.
@DBryanRhodes To allow a counterfactual, I think the Church would have been in a way worse place had they stuck with christotokos out of fear we'd get Mary wrong if we said theotokos. Put another way, if we can only get one right, I'm glad its christology.
@DBryanRhodes Every generation since Christ has thought they were living through the end times. One day, one will be right. But up til now all have been wrong...
@DBryanRhodes This is such an important point. My whole mindset changed when my friend broke it down as "we have 18 summers with our kid before he goes to college, we need to make them count." There was something about that increment that made it real to me how quickly this time will pass
@Sam_Vecenie vs Peterson, vs Dybansta, vs Boozer, each time Caleb was the best player on the court. At what point does he break into that triumvirate or is the general consensus cemented in place?
@DBryanRhodes Oh I've heard TV and film creators say this explicitly. It's why TV seems frozen in the early 2000s, cell phones are such a deus ex machina. Imagine trying to write Home Alone in the cell phone age...
@HOHBigPhil@RossMartinNC And what incentive did the committee provide to ever schedule more difficultly? Their whole season was measured by one true road game with a true freshman QB in his first start.
@DBryanRhodes You've new on this site long enough to know that theoretically two things can be true at once, but not here😜
Where I'll prioritize 1 over 2 is if believing 2 means we don't ever attempt any reasonable solutions for #1 (like being able to port your interest rate into a new loan)
